Snow Tire Review-Michelin X Ice Xi3

    Bought my Prius C 3 in late April 2012. Added 15" alloy wheels with no other modifications. Car came with Bridgestone Turanza EL400 tires, and I figured I would try the first winter here in Rhode Island with the stock tires, as there was only 16k miles on them by December. Never got stuck, but there were a few times when I didn't feel real secure.

    So now December 2013 comes along. I have 40k miles on the Turanza's, and decide not to risk another winter on them. Got three quotes and they were all within about $8.00 of each other for four tires with all extras. Was surprised to find out that even when you keep the old tires, you still have to pay the tire disposal fee. Don't know if that's a federal or RI thing.

    NON SNOW RIDE QUALITY: Excellent. No different than the stock tires. I had my Turanzas' at 36/34 lbs and put the snows at the same pressure. Did the mpg to ride comfort ratio testing right after getting the car, and quickly decided I preferred the better ride at 36/34 to the only slightly better mileage at 40+ like some others do. Still getting 60 mpg on my 40 mile commute, so I am very happy with this. One odd thing I noticed was at a spot I have to go through every day transitioning from a flat road to a sudden steep uphill where I almost always bottomed out the front lower air foil if not going very slowly, it never touches at any speed with these tires.

    NON SNOW NOISE: These are tad noisier than the stock tires, but I only hear it going slowly when the ICE is not running. At most common driving speeds of 40-70 mph, I don't notice any difference.

    NON SNOW HANDLING: Very competent. The X Ice seem pretty sticky. Close to what I would expect from a performance all season tire. I haven't pushed them really hard though, and I assume they would get a little squirmy at some point due to the more open tread pattern. Wet roads and puddles are handled with ease.

    SNOW HANDLING: When you look at these, they don't scream "Snow Tire" at you. The tread appears only a little more aggressive than the average all season tire. But Michelin has put some magic into these that belies their appearance. In slush, deep snow, and packed snow they perform very admirably. Once in a while, the back end will slip out for second or two if you get too greedy going around a curve (and you probably will at first as the tires can give you a bit of overconfidence that you'll need to dial back), but it quickly retains it's grip to get you back on track. They become very predictable after a little road time in the snow. Braking is sure and smooth. Haven't been on ice yet, but on packed snow, they are very secure.

    DOWNSIDES: Tread life. They only come with a 40k mile guarantee. You can probably stretch that with diligent rotation. But these are directional tires, so anything more than front to back will mean remounting.

    CONCLUSION: Highly Recommended!

    Hey I put these on my C2, on a spair set of C2 rims I acquired. They're 175/65r15 size. Neverything seems ok, I'm getting same MPG as before, however I have noticed a strange, low-pitched whining sound when turning my car left at slow speeds (like doing a 90 degree turn onto a road from a stop). The sound goes away when I straighten out the veh. Have you noticed a similar noise? I guess it could be the tread, but I don't hear it as much (or maybe at all) when I turn right, only left.

    There is definitely a whine that is noticeable at slow speeds, but I just checked again and it's no different going straight turning left or turning right on my C.

    I've been up and down the Coquihalla on my XI3s and I'm super impressed with them! I also live in a very wet Vancouver so even through significant water on the roads/highways (what would've had me hydroplaning for sure in my highlander) - these tires have handled VERY well.

    I just purchased a set of 4 X-ice3; low profile to fit new 17x7 winter rims I bought. The size is 215-45R17. I'm a bit late in the season but they came with a discount. I will have them in storage until NOV 2014 when the cold season is upon us again.

    I must be the first one on this forum with low profile snow tires on a Prius...LOL. Oh well I love my rims like how women love their shoes. A new set for every occasion!

    Worst snowy winter and still snowing in west Michigan , started the season with
    XIce i3 Michelin ,,, with rims and tpms ,,, have not been disappointed they are great

    Bingee, what size wheels are you running with the X-ice's? Any drop in MPGs?

    Grren4ever - it's hard to calculate a drop in MPG due to snow tires, as it drops anyway during the colder weather. But I have noticed on the very few somewhat warmer(50 degree) days we have had in the northeast this Winter, that gas mileage wasn't quite up to my normal 60 MPG, topping out between 56 and 57.

    I suspect any good snow tire will increase rolling resistance and reduce mileage somewhat. If anyone finds one that doesn't, and performs as well as the Xi3, I would love to hear about it. I only expect to get two to two and half winters out of these at best, and will be in the market again soon enough.

    rjdriver - only 2.5 winters life expectancy for you?

    Is that because you find they wear out fast or because you put a lot of mileage on the car every year? I recall reading that they come with a 60,000km / 40,000 mile treadwear warranty. I probably only travel 10,000kms during the autumn/winter months so hope these will last me 6 years.

    I do a lot of miles per year, and I suspect the Xi3s will lose their effectiveness as they age. With a 40,000 mile warranty, their snow performance will probably noticeably change after 30,000. But they are an excellent tire right now.

    We have X-ice and would never attempt winter without. The LRR tires are great in warmer climates or seasons but not in snow country. Installed on used Yaris wheels.

    I bought these tires too for my c back in December 2013, after a very small amount of snowfall in late November caused my stock tires to slip like crazy on the road.

    I spent about $1000 getting a new set of wheels for the winter tires to be mounted on, as I heard mounting tires on the same wheelset repeatedly every summer/winter is bad for both sets. Tirerack convinced me to buy TPMS (tire pressure monitor system) for each wheel, which was $50 each (so $200 total), but unfortunately Goodyear couldn't calibrate them, and a Toyota dealership said it would cost $60 to do it. Since the c can only remember 5 wheels (4 +spare tire) I didn't feel like paying that every time I swapped out the wheels, so I'm just going to put up with the "low tire pressure" warning on the winter tire set (the Toyota mechanic suggested the same thing). So in hindsight, I wouldn't bother getting TPMS on winter wheel set; save yourself the $200 and just keep an eye on your tire pressure.

    Overall, these tires made driving through winter 2014 in SE Wisconsin a breeze. While I still had some difficulty if there was more than say, 3-4 inches of snow on the road, which I'll chalk up to the c riding really low to the ground, in smaller amounts and on icy roads I didn't have much trouble driving through it. With all the little snowfalls we got repeatedly, riding through this in the stock tires would have been a nightmare.

    In fact I was more worried about other drivers hitting me, as I saw more than a couple of cars sliding around when the weather got bad. My mileage averaged in the low to mid 40's, which I can live with considering gas mileage sucks in the winter anyway and safety is more important than mileage when driving in winter weather.

    Nope, and for a lot of places, it feels like summer has yet to arrive lol.

    That said, this info will come in handy every November/early December.

    Next time, consider (cheaper) steel rims and don't even think about TPMS.
