Is it OK to store the spare smart key with its battery removed? I want to minimize battery drain during storage but don't know whether the smart key needs the battery to keep some sort of internal memory or not. Thanks!

Yes, you can store the Smart fob without a battery, if you wish to do so. The fob does not have volatile memory. Note that the car is programmed to recognize the fob, not the reverse.
