When I first began thinking about what option package I wanted, I dismissed the smart entry as "fluff", based partly on the Car and Driver writers who felt that it was superfluous (they loved the car, though).
Anyway, it came with the option 7 package that I got. To those of you wondering whether to get it or not, I recommend getting it; it's a great convenience.
Best thing about it is that I can leave my keys (with the $250 fob) zipped into my jacket, and still open up and drive the car. If I never take my keys out of my pocket, I can't easily misplace them in the house or office. A jacket is bigger and harder to miss than a set of keys.
I'm still futzing with the auto unlock feature. Sometimes, I feel like Dave talking to HAL when I'm trying to get into the car, because it seems fickle about opening doors.

    Bob,

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm dreading the next time I have to drive my "old" car and I walk up to the door and look at it waiting for it to make the first move.

I got package 9, and if there's one thing I never want to have to do again, it's get halfway out to the car, realize I forgot my keys, then go back into the house, get the keys, and have to actually use them. Not to mention, locking the keys in the car with it running! (Yes the 2000 dodge neon allows this 'feature', and I tested it).

If you're referring to having the SS/SE unlock all your doors, just hold down the unlock button and the panic button for 5 seconds. When the car beeps a dual beep twice (total of four beeps), that'll allow for all doors to be unlocked when you walk up to the driver door.

Does that little "hold-down-the-unlock-button-and-panic-button" maneuver have to be done each time, or does this program the fob to unlock all of the doors every time?

Just once - you can have it set to 3 different modes, the default is if you're at the driver door, it only unlocks that door. If you're at the passenger door, or at the trunk, it unlocks all doors.

The second setting, which I set mine to, is basically, always unlock all doors regardless of where I'm at. I'm not sure what the third setting is.

My partner was trying to find out yesterday if there was some secret voice command to have the car go into park without hitting the button, or to powering itself off. It's a damn smart car, but I gently informed him it's not that smart. :)

very strange, to program my car to unlock all doors from the driver's side, you have to hold down the LOCK button together with the panic button for 5-6 seconds and then i get the 4 beeps and can open everything by touching the drivers side alone.

Sorry, my mistake. You are right - it's the LOCK button and PANIC button held for 5 seconds, not unlock.

Yesterday and today I have a rental prius while my car is getting the clear-coat and toyotaguard. It's package 8. ie, everything except SS/SE and bluetooth.

Let me tell you how aggravating it is having a prius that doesn't know it's you so you can get in and take of whenever *you're* ready.

If you don't have SS/SE, you won't notice you're missing anything. However, if you have it, enjoy it! I can't wait to pick my baby back up so I can have this feature once again.

I love the smart entry but I wish they had put the sensors on the rear doors as well. I don't want to take the fob out of my pocket but it's also a nuisance to have to open the driver's door before opening the rear door to drop in a briefcase, etc.

When you walk 'near' the driver's side door, it senses the key - I haven't tried it myself yet, but is it not possible to walk to the driver/front passenger door, let it sense you, then open the back door? I do agree that all doors should have the lock and unlock sensors.

With the package 8 car I had for the 1.5 days while mine was at the dealer, no SS/SE, but I was suprised to see the door handles still had the black button. I even pushed it, hoping it'd at least lock the doors, regardless of it knowing where the key was - but it did nothing! Personally that's just silly engineering I think - at least have it do *something* if it's built into other packages!

You don't have to open the front door - just touch the door handle and it'll open all the doors.

I know, it's a small distinction, but it does work.

I find if I want to open all the doors I just touch the hatch handle. Or if I'm approaching it from the passenger side, I'll touch that handle. (I don't have it programmed to open all doors from the drivers side since I drive alone most of the time.)

I think the reason for not having it on the rear doors is that they would then need the same "sensing" handles which would probably increase the price ... and it's another thing that could break.
