It has been in the news a lot lately that our cars are transmitting data back to the manufacturer that they then sell. Does anyone know the location of the cellular sim car in the 2017 Prius trim level 2, no navigation?

I believe that your 2010 Prius has not been communicating with Toyota for a while. Older cars used the 3rd generation cellular network for communications (like my spouse's 2016 Subaru). As these networks are no longer in service, older cars can no longer communicate back to the manufacturer.

Even with newer cars- the automakers don't want to pay a cellular subscription any more than you do.

So they either don't get the telematic data until you activate some kind of data connectivity within the car, or they set it up such that the car forwards gathered data to their app on your phone, which in turn sends it back to the mother ship.

Meaning for many cars, you can skip the data gathering by a) not activating the optional onboard hotspot or 'connected features' subscription and b) not installing the car's associated app on your phone.

    There are always exceptions...

I’m thinking that they wouldn’t pay for cellular data.
As mentioned above they would just let you solve their ‘last mile’ problem by using the onboard WiFi or the dealer visits.
Some Priuses come with telephone transceiver modules (IIRC) but they do not have removable SIMs (also - IIRC)
