My '07 Prius has 75K miles. Thinking of trading it for a '13. Reasons ? If i get a '13, it won't have all the recalls and kinks this car had, so I can drive the new one 200K miles, instead of keeping the '07. Also, I have to replace a headlight kit for over 600. It has had several recalls, the most recent one for a steering wheel shaft issue connected with a class action lawsuit. Also, when i go over bumps sometimes it can accelerate.... that was fixed in another recall, but sometimes it can happen. should i trade it in now or wait til 100-200K miles ? I've heard if you keep them past 80K miles, you won't get much on a trade.. if i trade it in now, i might get 9 or 10K ? It's in pretty good condition. Thanks.

I would trade it in. If you put that $10,000 as a down payment on the the Prius you will have very low car payments and years of worry free motoring.

Right now the PIP Base is a sweet deal with tax breaks, incentives, discounts and 0% financing.

Toyota almost want to give the car away. Always good to take advantage of Toyota when they are desperate to sell cars.

I recently traded in my 3 year old vehicle for a new Prius.
You lose money on the deal trading in a newer vehicle....you just do.

But there is a window with any vehicle where I think the "value" of it being a trade in diminishes to the point where it almost ONLY makes sense to keep the vehicle.

If you really want a new Prius, this might be a good time to do it. Or at least that's the lie I told myself when I traded in my Honda Fit.

I'm going to vote "Do It" even though there is really no great logical reason to justify it.

I was given 11,000 on my trade back in Feb., 07 Touring with 97,000, if that helps!

I think it is a personal choice if you go with PIP or Hybrid.

Look at your cars Kelly Blue Book value and base the trade on that. If you have patience you can try and sell your car private party and make a little more for yourself.

Your car is worth 10K now. However with it's age you can expect some repairs in the future. Purchasing a new car and with a low price and payment due to your large down payment and worry free motoring is a real positive move. Waiting a few more years will only delay the inevitable. That is my opinion.

Is the car currently paid for? Does it run reliably and have no real issues. Who's to say the next one wont have any recalls. The way I see it you have at least 5 - 7 more easy years on that car completely payment free. Why waste money on a new one. I don't see any benefit unless the current car you own doesn't meet your needs.

Nothing says the new Gen 3 Prius will not have recalls/issues in the future or that you'll want to keep it 200,000 miles. Have you spent any time reading the Gen 3 Forum? There's no right answer. It's very hard to remove emotion from car purchases. Purely money-wise, you're better off keeping the '07, I'd say.

The dealership will likely give you a decent amount for your trade since they can turn around and sell it as a Certified Preowned due to the lower mileage. Also don't forget Toyota is offering 0% financing. Tough to turn that down. Just get in touch with every dealer within 50-100 miles and get them in a price war. Good luck.
