    Hi all,

What's the latest opinion on extended warranties?

I'm buying a certified 2013 with 40k miles on it.

Historically, Consumer Reports has advised against extended warranties.

But, what do you think ?

    Thanks,

    PNB

We just went through this subject with another member. The general consensus was "NO".

That's what I figured. It was about $2k for 6 additional years of mechanicals. I had a hard time believing there would be more than that much suffering for such a young (or even a middle aged) prius.

Read the fine print. You will find many exclusions. Again, not worth the money.

Oh, I forgot my manners. "Welcome to Prius Chat!" Best of luck to you. (y)

I got offered an extended warranty to 7 yrs for $995 for the used '13 Prius3 I just bought. 20K miles with a few months still left on 3 yr warranty and 4 yrs on the 7 yr warranty. Certified, which includes 1 yr free maintenance. I said no.

I bought a 2012 Prius Four with 34k miles and the salesman pushed me to the limit to buy the warranty and I said NO!

Apparently you didn't agree with what his limit was:D.

Whatever money you would have spent on a "warranty", squirrel away in the "just in case" car fund.

While there is great reliability in the Prius, there are cars built on Mondays, so there is the occasional bad actor. You can read all about what these issues are at your leisure, but enjoy the new to you Prius (y).

Pushy contractor, salesperson, etc. I just say: "I'm only going to say this only once. Are you paying my bills? Then kindly STFU."

Only once, did I encounter someone who apparently did not think I was serious with the above statement. I left and made my purchase elsewhere.

    EDIT:
"I'm only going to say this once. Are you paying my bills?" is used when not too annoyed.

"I'm only going to say this only once. Are you paying my bills? Then kindly STFU." is reserved for the person I want to strangle.

    +1!
The devil and his minions are in the microscopic fine print. The stuff you want covered, won't be covered.

For peace of mind and to be pragmatic spread that $2k over 6 years right now, into a new savings account that will act as your future Prius maintenance/repair fund. Here's the breakdown: $2,000/6years = $333.33/year / 1year/12months = $27.78/month / 1month/30days = 93cents/day

Your $2k will be used on your vehicle and you'll earn some interest. Sure beats enriching the dealership and the extended warranty company.
