Should I buy an 05 instead of waiting for an 06?

My dealer has a demo black 05 Package #4 available for $21,995.

Should I get it? I want a Package #7 but maybe I could live with a Package #4? (I wouldn't be upset about losing the backup camera since I just wouldn't want to rely on that anyway)

I'm not sure if my old POS Ford Escort would make it another 6 months without looking at some major repairs. (all new brakes, tires, and possibly some other things)

Please tell me what you think. Tracy

PS If I want an 06 in my color/package they said I would probably be waiting until May.

PSS Would I still be eligible for the $3,150 credit?

Tracy, if you live in an area where there is more than one dealer, I suggest calling all of them. Wait times and prices vary enormously. I was told I'd have to wait 6 months from one dealer as well, then purchased an '06 from another dealer 30 minutes away that same day.

I have called the dealer about 30 minutes away and he laughed at me when I asked for a Prius. He also said it wasn't right to work with more than one dealer.

I wonder if their is a dealer that comes to these boards that might have a Prius for me. I could fly to their location to pick it up. I wonder if that would help me? I don't want to have to pay anymore than MSRP though.

Yeah I JUST want a car. That's all. It seems all the dealers frown on going to multiple dealers.

Have you tried calling all the dealers in Milwaukee? They get a lot more allocations. I would think you could find something faster that way.

No but I will try that! So you don't think I should get the 05?

Yes, the full credit is there until June 30

    Take a look at:
    http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Toyota_Prius_...redit_Incentive

You can save up that much more money while waiting and have a lower amount to borrow :D

How many miles does it have on it? This may be a USED car now, and NOT elgible for the tax credit. Check this out carefully.

    Tracy,

Be careful not to confuse what is in a Pkg when you are comparing an 05 and an 06. A 2005 Pkg 4 does not contain the NAV system, but, the 2005 Pkg #6 does contain the NAV system.

On an 06 pkg #6 does not have the Nav system but the pkg #7 does have NAV.

If you were orignially looking at having the NAV system in your desired car you need to compare the 2005 Pkg #6 to the 2006 pkg #7. If you are looking at a 2005 pkg #4 it is similar but not identical to 2006 pkg #6.

If all that is of concern is the backup camera, you can have a backup camera added to the 2005 for somewhere between $500 - $750 with an after market camera. My dealer offered to install either of two different backup cameras on my 2005 at that price.

My dealer was able to find a 2005 Pkg #6 (w/NAV) and sold it to me for $26K plus tax and tags. The 2006 with Nav would have run $28K plus tax and tags.

I also looked at the 2005 pkg #4 and another dealer offered it to me for $23K plus tax and tags. That is about $1K off MSRP. This car had the VSC which I would have had to go up to the 2006 pkg #6 to get it in the car. The 2006 pkg #6 would have run about $26K.

You need to be very careful to compare what is in each package because what is included in the 2005 pkgs suddenly is grouped with other options in the 2006 pkgs.

If you go with an 05 you should be able to negotiate a price lower than MSRP and have immediate availability (it is in stock.) With the 2006 you will have little or no room to negotiate price.

Hummm, I really don't know what the deal will be on that car as far as the tax credit then. It is only for new cars. Maybe dealers have some way to make a used car new, but it sounds a bit problematic to me. Smarter people need to help with this aspect.

I would have to get a substantial discount to buy a one year old (translate to about $2000 depreciation for that fact alone) used car.

I don't know what that package sold for new in '05, but I suspect that the price they are asking is way too much.

I would never buy a demo...demos are used by people test driving and the staff of the stealership. These cars get beat on regularly like rental cars. Expect it to need maintenance like brakes and fluid changes sooner (at least initially) due to the beating it likely took.

the paperwork will require specification as to whether it is new. im pretty sure some states will consider it new if it has never been licensed or leased. others will not. ask your dealer, if it is not considered new, then no credit, if it is, no prob.

dont take the dealers word for it, make sure you read the paperwork first.

Fortunately thier not your Daddy, nor are they out for your interest...... They won't mind charging you 2200.00 or more for a less than platinum warranty package and they won't even feel guilty, but your supposed to sell your soul to them?....

Its not your fault they can't get a prius for you... if someone else can get it...buy it!

It has all to do with whether the 3000 miles were in the dealers ownership "not yet sold" or whether you will be the second owner.

You have to be the first owner.... and it must be an 06 to get the credit.

I believe this is false. As long as you take possession in 2006 of a new prius, you should get the tax credit, it doesn't matter the model year of the prius.
