    Hi there,

As no research helped me to fix my problem I just want to post this here so you know it when running into this issue.

If your Prius 2016 says "Shifted to N stop vehicle to shift to P" when starting it, most likely it's time to change your 12V battery.

    Other signs I had:
The parking button light came up late.
The car was working perfectly after starting.
The message appeared in 50% of cases when starting the car.

    Have a good day.

Thank you for this tip. My car was doing the exact same symptoms as you described. Replaced 12V battery and the message has not appeared since.

The initial hint for me was the two rapid high-pitched beeps when starting the car (corresponding to the warning message). I had to use the slow-mo video function on my phone to grab the actual message, as it only appears for a split second before the Prius car animation is played.

Toyota needs some editorial oversight, or less; they need something. A message like that is unintelligible.

C'mon man! It means, the car/computer thought it was necessary to disconnect the hybrid synergy drive, hence shifted to N. And now since there is no drive, it wants you to pull to the side, stop and place in P.

If this happened while you were driving, you'd sense loss of drive, no reaction to the "gas pedal" and instinctively look for a way to coast to a stop off the road. Then you might notice the message and put it in P.

I think I would not read it the same way FuelMiser does—which I suppose supports Mendel's contention that it doesn't communicate well.

If you showed me that message with no context, I would assume that you got it by pushing the P button while the car was moving, and the car reacted by shifting to N instead to avoid mangling the parking pawl, and explained to you that you should come to a stop first before shifting to P.

Now, if that message came up when I was positive I had not just pushed the P button while in motion, I would next explore whether there might be any electrical cause for the car to think I had just pushed P while in motion.

Well, I still suspect that message was intended for the case where you push P but you're moving, and it goes to N instead, and says "I went to N, stop the car first to shift to P".

And I'm thinking if you were driving in that situation, and you had just pushed P but the car was moving and it went to N and a message appeared saying "went to N, stop the car first to shift to P", you'd think oh yeah, right, I get it.

But in an odd situation where the message spuriously appears, probably because the ECU thought you pressed P but you don't think you did, it'd be puzzling.
