Selling My 2010 and taking it in the shorts!

i have been reading some conflicting numbers here from people buying and people selling. it may depend on where you live too. what did you pay, what is kbb and what do you think you can get?

 

You are lucky to find a sucker that will pay you 20K for it. I think you will be closer to the 18-19K range. It really isn't all that bad given the selling price was around 22-23K

 

Man, all I can say is what you already know. Your going to take a big hit in the wallet. Our pkg II we paid 22,398 (and some do even better at Power Toyota) + T,T, and fees for an out the door of 24,980. You should get some of your license fee back, but depending on how many months you have left on it, it may not be much.
I'd certainly be speaking with my new emploier about both the green factors of your Prius and the wallet factors if your forced to sell it. Ask if they can give you an allowance or even show them how good it would be for them to lease the car from you and then let you drive it.
Good luck. If you have to sell it on the open market, you will be loosing money. Sorry about that.

it's definately a buyers market now. between the economy and toyota's image problems resale is being affected. someone out my way got four grand off a new one. high end though. it wasn't long ago you had to pay sticker. sorry i can't offer better advice.

You can join the class action lawsuit to recover your loss. I think it started in Florida.

 

I'm facing a similar situation . I am going to sell my 09 Prius level 2 and just today had a dealer offer me 7 k less than I paid for it [ despite the fact it only has 11.000 miles on it ] I bought the estended 7 year warranty , not sure that has any value ... Any body have any suggestions ? We don't have carmax where I live ....

I doubt this is a helpful suggestion because I suspect cash flow is an issue for you as much as anyone else these days. But, in the unlikely event that's not the case, could you consider sitting on it, not driving it and racking up more miles, waiting for this "OMG all Toyotas are deathtraps waiting to explode or take off to the moon on their own because they're deliberately engineered to be evilevilevil" BS to subside, and Toyota to get back to their typical marketing strategy in a few months, and possibly being able to pay it down a bit and sell it for more than it would go now? It is quite possible that as the economy (hopefully) and the driving season pick up, gas prices will as well, and it could conceivably be worth quite a bit more this summer.

It sounds like things are better in Phoenix, fortunately for you, than in Chicagoland. Here a dealer has new Prius II before TTL at $21,600, and Lombard Toyota had a Black Prius II with 1900 miles on it advertised at $19,300.

 

Yeah and I (and others) got flamed when we posted that we were upset that the recent Toyota debacle was causing real and immediate cash losses. This is exactly what people were talking about All I can suggest is keep it super clean and do a private sale. If you can afford to take your time selling it, do so as gas prices always go up in the summer months which causes desire for the car to go up.

 

If you can wait until July-August when gas price hike up again, you might get a better price.

Wait until the end of May, prices will be going up in advance of Memorial Day I bet. They're already above $3/gal in Chicago, I wouldn't be surprised if there's another 15 cents by summer.

 

Yeah, but while waiting for gas prices to come up, he'll be making his monthly payment (didn't say how much it is), insurance and who knows what else. Better take that into account before waiting.

Face it - any new cars depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot. The Prius is no longer any different.

 

FWIW, unless it has changed since I got mine last month, the free maintenance is only for buyers with another Toyota/Lexus in the household. And, it's only good for 2yrs/25000 miles. That makes it good for 2 oil changes and 4 tire rotations. So, your 50k maintenance package is still worth something.

 

OK - some thoughts?

What you OWE on a car makes no connection to the value of that car.

Even if you'd paid full sticker for that car 10+ months ago, you'd have paid $22,750 with mats. So, driving it 17K, it's barely depreciated 10%?

Not bad!! What other vehicle can you drive that will only depreciate 10% in its first year!

PS: Black? In Phoenix?! Yikes!

 

This month, for April, the National Advertising is for all buyers of all new Toyotas to have 2 years, 25K service free. On a Prius, with synthetic oil, that's 2 oil changes (every 10K) and your 15K service.

In March, it was a LOYALTY perk for having a Toyota registered to your household...
