I have 23650 miles on my 04. Just last week the screen started acting up. It will all of a sudden go blank or show no numbers at all. It also effects the audio system which will cut out for no reason. It seems like it is gradually getting worse. After driving for a while it starts working fine then after a while it stops again. I will take it to my dealer soon. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Widely reported, your MFD needs to be replaced. The positive is that you will be able to switch b/w the Energy and Consumption screens with the steering wheel INFO button with the new MFD.

I've been sorta hoping mine would act up just for that benefit!

Thanks for the info. Talked with my dealer today and their service department was not familiar with the MFD issue. What information should I provide them with. They sugessted that I bring the car in then they can determine what is wrong. The dealership is 50 miles away and I am hoping that they can do the job with one visit. I do not think they will have the necessary parts available. They were willing to review information on this issue in advance if I can provide them with some. Does anybody know where I can direct my dealer to to get the necessary information? Thank you in advance.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Out of the blue the screen started acting crazy and none of the buttons on the display or the steering wheel could get it to function right. Took it to the dealer and he diagnosed it as a shorted out display unit. Display came in a couple days later, and it was replaced. The little INFO toggle didn't work before, but I noticed that now it does go between screens and I love it!

Interesting note: my dealership said they've already replaced at least four of these 2004 displays in the past few months. guess the initial screens weren't built so great.

    30,000 miles so far...

Happened to me on Thanksgiving on my 2004 w/just under 14k miles. Stereo occasionally shuts off whether or not screen is working. Some things on screen work, some are blank (like outside temp.), shows 100 mpg on 5 minute increments, etc. Occasionally but rarely can get the "check air conditioner connection" or something like that screen. Audio screen says "audio off" even when it isn't.

I went to my close-by (10 miles) dealer today at lunch. Service advisor gave me blather about how they service most of the Prius in the Twin Cities, they've never seen the problem, I'd have to drop it off, etc.

The last time I let them touch my car, for one of the software updates, they blew an ECU, so I'm not too excited about leaving them my car again, especially when I know they'll call me at the end of the day to tell me they have to order the MFD and come back another day. Or, worse, have to drive one of their Corollas in the meantime.

So, I drove to another Toyota dealer, now 25 miles away from my house, and the kind service writer asked the Prius tech. to glance at it. One quick look, and they've ordered a new MFD for me, and I won't have to bring the car in until the part has arrived.
