Today, by accident, I jumped the gun and pressed power while I was still in Drive getting ready to get out of the car. It automatically put it in Park and shut off the car. Is this a handy way to skip a step or is it any harm to the car?

    Thanks!

Yes, it will put in Park before shutting down...

...however, I did read of one PCer that had an issue with his Prius because, apparently, the Parking Prawl did not actually engage correctly when he shut it down, and had to have it towed to the dealer for some extensive work.

I'm back to putting it in Park first, before hitting the Power OFF.

I never put the car in park before turning the power off. 18 months, no issues.

Sorry to take over your thread but how do I go from car on back to accessory/aux mode (engine off)?

Just pressing Power is fine. The Prius automatically applies Park before powering down. As for the person with the reported parking pawl problem, most likely it was going to happen either way.

Noweyout- T0 go to accessory power, it would work just like a traditional car- turn the car off, take your foot off the break once for radio and then twice for everything and of course press the break to start. Thanks!

Aww! I do that now. I thought it could be one step, like turning the keys back one click.

You could unplug the HV ECU which will fault the car and turn off the main relays so essentially it will be in ACC mode. :D

** Note: DO NOT DO THIS! lol

I accidentally did it too the other night and thought it was a nice shortcut but I have not done it again in fear that it would mess something up.

I press Park in the morning when I get to work so I can listen to the radio as I put up the sun screen and gather my belongings. In the evening when I pull into the garage I just press power and shut it down. So far no issues for me either... It would have been nice if Toyota had included retained power on the radio so it would stay on for a few minutes or until the door was opened. My truck had retained power on both the radio and power windows, and it was nice...

I didn't know about this option for months but for the last two have been just hitting power. I am sure it will be fine because it's what the computer is unequivocally letting me do and if there was something wrong with this simple process I am rather positive that the engineers designing it wouldn't have allowed it to happen.

It is in the owner's manual P.163.

"If you stop the hybrid system without setting the shift position to "P", the shift position will be shifted to "P" automatically....."

If this causes any harm, I'm sure Toyota will put a warning against it.

+1 on just powering down without placing it into Park first...FWIW. I agree that there would be dire warnings against this "shortcut" if there were anything wrong with doing so...
Of course if you're on your way to work and you want to finish out that last news bit on NPR, placing into Park will leave the radio on for you to gather up your belongings before you leave the car.
My truck has retained power until I open the door for the radio and the windows, and that would have been a nice touch for this car, but just having it for the windows is OK...
