Safelite glass repair question

This question pertains to the rear driver side window. The window broke recently due to a break-in by a criminal who also damaged the edge of the roof and top of the door frame. So Safelite came out and replaced the broken window. The body work will be done at a later date. During the window glass repair visit various problems arose and finally the tech had to call for help. Another tech arrived and I watched how he resolved the problem. The first tech could not install the metal bar that grips the bottom of the window so the the internal mechanism has a place to grab to raise and lower the window. It is a U-shaped bar that slides onto the bottom edge of the window. However, the tech could not get it to go onto the bottom edge of the window. The superstar tech that arrived resolved this issue by holding the window on edge and pounding the bar onto the window edge with a mallet or hammer. It required quite some effort but eventually he got the bar into position and left the site so the first tech completed the repair. The window now operates just fine except when closing, the final sound is softer than the window on the passenger side. So I measured the thickness of the glass and the new window is a few thousandths thicker than the passenger side rear window. OK. So now the question. Will the added gripping pressure of the bottom metal bar due to the slightly thicker glass cause the window to fracture at some point down the road? Is this a glass failure waiting to happen? What say you, Priuschat?

 

Yes, an insurance job. So I emailed the glass manufacturer (Auto Temp Inc of Batavia, OH) with the thickness question.

 

Yes, I will definitely bring it up with my claims handler. Especially since today I noticed the replacement non-OEM glass appears wavy from the outside. The other side OEM windows front and rear do not appear wavy. Since my policy does not require that I accept non-OEM parts, this window glass may have to be replaced. I am not opposed to non-OEM parts if they are equivalent. This glass does not seem equivalent.

 

Right about OEM being better. In this case, the non-OEM glass says 'Made in USA' so China can't be blamed for this one.
