We've got a little over 1k on our new '06, and we're loving it. However, occaisonally (about once a day, seemingly at random) the ICE will shut down very roughly at a stop. It feels kind of like "dieseling" or the way a two-stroke engine will kick if it goes lean - just a couple of hard torque kicks on shutdown. I haven't noticed it under way, and it's not really enough to scare me, but it's something I don't really expect out of a new car. Is this something I should worry about? Does anybody else's do this?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(7lions @ Nov 9 2006, 10:56 PM) </div> Mine doesn't kick that hard, but on occasion if the engine is cold, I will find a kind of "buh-buh-buh" shudder then shutdown. Only happens when it's cold. Don't know if this helps...and of course, go see you dealer if you're really concerned. Glad you're otherwise loving your car. I adore mine...
I have over 8,000 miles on mine and I still have occasional rough shut downs. In fact just today it happened as I was leaving work.
They all do that. Some people find it happens more on a new Prius, and happens less often after a few thousand miles. It may be they just get used to it, so it's hard to say. Mostly the bumpy shutdowns occur when the ICE is cold. The Prius is careful about burning excess fuel out of the ICE when it shuts down to avoid an over-rich situation on the next start-up; that's probably what causes the gallop. Tom
Rough shutdowns are completely normal, especially when it's cold. And it's for pretty much the same reason you described with diesels... The car stops injecting fuel into the cylinders, so it "goes lean" and shudders as it stops. Pay attention to it, and you'll probably notice it happens most often during the warm up stage (first 5-10 mintues of a trip) and hardly at all after that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(7lions @ Nov 9 2006, 07:56 PM) </div> Since your Prius is new, it will do that. I remember when my car was new and it felt like something was going to break! It can be qutie rough at times but it will smoothen out as you rack up the miles. Also, cooler temperatures will induce the rough shut down.
Glad to hear it! Like I said, it wasn't enough to make me worry - just enough to make me wonder if I should worry...
