Rim upgrade what tire and why

Are you replacing 15"?

215/45R17 is TOYOTA's stock size which I'd be sticking with. Maybe you risk the wider tyres causing fouling - I'm not sure. Legally, the Speedo MUST read over, and maybe the 225s might become illegal when partly worn.

I'm lowered on 18's. I'm using an extremely sticky compound tire, continental contactextreme sport. If you do anything, I would highly advise going with a low rolling resistance tire. I enjoy the cornering and confidence with these tires, but they definitely impact gas mileage on a prius. I went from mid 50's to mid 30's MPG. I don't mind it, but I also have the OEM roof rack which I believe hurt my MPG as well. I also have the full liberty walk kit and Airrex air suspension on the way, so at this point gas mileage has been dismissed. Hahaha

The Owner's Manual spec for 17 inch is 215/45R17.

FWIW, I get similar numbers as you:



225/45R17 does seem closer, maybe too wide for the rim? Another alternative was 205/50R17, also very close to 15" O.D. They're often rated Extra Load though.

 

I wonder how close the wider tire is to rubbing the suspension?

 

Get 205 50 17, less stiff rider and a save you gas, i wish they have 195 tires for 17, don't do believe this rolling BS marketing, thinner tires you get more mpg, and 50 series is closer to the height of the 15"tires than 45 series

 

I've toyed with that (with our 3rd gen with 17") but see a couple of wrinkles:

1. Seems like all the 205/50R17's are "extra load"? Not sure what that means, stiffer ride?
2. Costco for one probably won't do it, they're sticklers.

I like the idea though, all the pluses, and yeah, the Outside Diameter more closely matches the 15".

 

The taller the tire more softer ride, my work is all driving related I do 60-70k miles per year driving, if you get 55 series much better it will affect you real mileage on your car, I mean taller tires will gives you a little less mileage you put in your car. Hehe and again less stiffer ride, but careful in your gauge when you are driving 60mph it means you are driving 61-63mph.
With regards to my last post, don't believe this gas saver tires low rolling BS, the higher thread rating 500+ will give you more miles on tire because it is less sticky on the road due to the rubber being harder, the lower thread rating like 280 on Michelin tires are amazing on braking but I only get 30k miles out of that tire pushing over the limit but you really don't notice the difference on braking, imo you don't need this more sticky on road unless you don't know how to brake and you drive crazy like racing on the street. I found out buying not known brand with 540 thread rating like accelerate phi-r here in Bay area I get them for $230 for set of 4 installed free mount balancing and rotation and repair for 60,000 miles but since I drive in the city I get 50-55,000 miles life on it pushing it to the limit some times less 45,000 because I drive in the city, you can get better miles on it if you don't drive in the city because of turning all the time and making u turn will burn your thread fast, so don't turn the steering wheel when your car is stop, always move a little bit.

 

Test drove an 18 Prius 2. Loved it, but tire noise is the problem. I guess as quiet as the car is, you're going to hear it. My question, is there a brand tire that is possibly quieter, or last longer than stock tires. Thx for any answers.

 

I just kept the stock 15 in tires. I like the softer ride than low profile tires.

Why is it no one has ever liked original equipment tires?

 

Mine are Toyo Extensa A/S. They are great on dry pavement. So so on wet. This will be my first winter with car, so hopefully snow traction will be acceptable.
