Return on Hybrid Sales Tax in SC

    I just mailed forms to return my sales tax on my Prius that is now one month old. My dealer called to tell me that SC was refunding sales tax from July 06 until July 07. SC is also giving tax credit of 20% of the federal amount.
    Not only am I very pleased with the Prius and its fuel economy, SC is helping to improve my decision. I am averaging just below 50 mpg with much of the mileage delivering meals on wheels. I now have 3100 miles.

    I had a call from Toyota of Easley sales dept to come in at my convience to fill out forms to get a refund on sales tax on all hybrid sales from July 06 to July 07 from South Carolina .
    It is SC Dept of Revenue form ST-447 called Fuel Efficiency Tax Rebate and is mailed to
    SC Dept of Revenue
    Tales Tax- Rebate Dept
    PO Box 125
    Columbia, SC 29214-0106

    Hmm... the only information I could find was for plug-in hybrids, fuel cell vehicles, and Flex-Fuel vehicles (E-85):

    But this is very interesting:

    (4) There shall be a sales tax rebate of up to $500 for purchase of equipment that results in the conversion of a conventional hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle to a plug-in hybrid gasoline-electric vehicle. The rebate shall be in the form of a payment sent to the buyer upon completion of a form created by the Department of Revenue and made available to the public and dealers.

    HI -

    Is this true for Southern California as well as South Carolina?

    Do SC dealers refund California Sales Tax (which is high) on the Prius?

    Ah, the life of the (not classic) Early Adopter. No big tax break, no sales tax refund, no two-model-years-later improvements.

    Harkens back to signing up for RoadRunner a month before they waived the $100+ in fees/install charges...

    The SC sales tax refund is from July 1, 2006 until June 30, 2007 on regular Prius cars. the max is $300 on three types of vehicles. Flex Fuel , Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Hybrid Gas-Electric.

    There is another $500 rebate on purchase of equipment used to convert conventional gasoline-electric vehicle to plug-in hybrid gas-electric vehicles.

    I hope this clears up the SC Rebate.
