I have a drive-by busted side mirror (left side). The glass is broken, and the coupling between the mirror kit and the arm on the door is broken (although not the housing). Apparently, it's not possible to buy parts individually--I have to buy the whole kit, which runs close to CAD $400.

Any advice on a more economical repair?

    Thanks,

    Ed

Unfortunately, i don't think you'll find much cheaper anywhere else.

Of course, you could always get a cheap hand mirror and some duct tape...

meanie, but funny, you cuold always ask someone who just replaced their side mirror and ask if they will sell the shell, then you will have to buy the motor and all that other stuff might save you some cash, not sure.

or you could use this opportunity to upgrade BOTH mirrors for roughly the same price as you've mentioned for one(!!!!) mirror to those LED signal mirrors lol.

Sorry to hear that. :( Same thing happened to me a few weeks after I bought my car. Luckily, it was only the mirror that broke (completely smashed, actually, which was surprising) and there was no damage to the housing or anything else. They were able to replace just the glass -- cost about $130. From your description, is sounds like the housing itself isn't broken, just the "coupling"? Did they say that the coupling is considered part of the housing, which is why you have to buy the whole thing?

Maybe there's a wrecked Prius with an intact side view mirror in a junkyard somewhere.

Then again, if you do have to buy a new one, at least you can install it yourself and save a little money.

Can you take a picture of the exact part(s) you need? I have pretty much a complete driver's side mirror assembly, and would be willing to sell it for much laess than Toyota asks. If you could post a picture then I can tell you if I have that particular piece.

    PriusRos -

I've got a hot flash for you -

Next time that you end up with the glass broken in your outside rearview mirror, DON'T do anything to the mess!

Run down to your local NAPA auto parts store (or similar) and ask for the replacement mirror glass. It will have a "peel & stick" back. It will stick to the remaining table glass pieces that are still in the old mirror shell. [IMG]

An outfit called MidwayAutoSupply, com has something like I've described.[IMG]

    You're welcome -

    PriusRos -

W-e-e-l-l-l-l - If you look closely, you can see the second piece of glass on top of the first. I contend that it's hardly noticable.

In fact, I can just about gaurantee that if you collect 10 mechanically inclined guys to try to find a "repair" that you had made to your vehicle -They'd strike out!

I also just replaced driver's side rear view mirror. The glass was not broken but the black plastic housing was in dozens of pieces and the mirror had limited movement using the buttons on the driver's door arm rest. Damage probably due to another vehicle right side mirror hitting my left side mirror and no other damage to my Prius.
Total cost was $380. The mirror comes as a unit connected to the triangular piece that aligns vertically on the door. At local Toyota dealer unit cost $250 with $40 for the cover and $90 labor for installation. I used two coupons and was able to use my original cover so price was ONLY about $300--ouch!!!
