Replace Under Engine Splash Guard

I also need this part. Wher did you find it for sale?

 

I also have the same problem, I need to replace the splash guard, but I don't know if this consider as warranty, if not where can I get this part for cheap but OEM.

 

^ it "should" be a warranty issue but good luck convincing your dealer/Toyota that it is.

Is this third generation Prius you're talking about? Your signature says older version, but...

Anyway, if the large plastic panel under the engine of a third gen is the issue, I've pulled ours off and taken a few a few pics here:

It's not involved, but you do need floor jack and safety stands (or ramps).

 

My car is the 3rd gen. I'm thinking of replacing the guard first, and if it ever fell out again then I'm going to take it off.

Does anyone know what website I can order the guard for around $40?

 

FYI - the front of the splash guard came loose on my car so that it was dragging on the ground. This happened in January, and Toyota did tell me it wasn't covered because it was probably due to me hitting something. I disagreed and complained, and the dealer did a "courtesy" no charge replacement.

Now it's happened again - second time in six months. My daughter is on her way to Phoenix from So. Cal and it fell down again. She got it removed by a tow truck driver and we'll deal with it when she returns.

The part numbers the dealer used were listed as follows:

76851-47030 COVER FR SPOILER
52161-02020 PIECE, RR BUMPER

We all need to email and document this issue. I have the same issue and now they are not covering the cost since it is out of warranty. I did however purchased Toyota VSA extended warranty but it still does NOT cover the part. The splash is definitely defective so why we should cover the repair. I've contacted Toyota and they said if this is happening to many other owners they will reimburse us for the repair. It's not pefect, a couple of holes not lined up with the body but can be easily drilled. On mine, the latch hardness for the oil change panel was assembled on the wrong side so I just had to remove and remount it. It was worth saving over a $100 though.

I also noticed that there was no fastener in the center area of the cover (I think the original cover is the same) so the middle section was sort of loose and sag lower than the perimeter, probably add stress to all the fastener along there. What I did was to drill 2 holes in the center of the cover, the section right below the body's center brace (bar), one on the left and one on the right, and zip tied the cover to the brace to add support.

 

Rock Auto used to sell them cheap. There was a TSB for this panel on GEN III because of the oil door, but it was time/mileage limited.

I actually ordered one from PartsGeek.com

The one from PartsGeek is "Made in Taiwan." The OE undercover is injection molded. Since Toyota ordered millions from their vendor, it was cost effective for the manufacturer to make the $250,000+ molds. On that account. Toyota charges over $200 for the replacement.

Both are made of HDPE. The PartsGeek one is vacuum formed from one sheet usually over a fabricated wooden mold and cut out.
None of the insulating pads or plastic clips of the OE undercover are included. That's not a problem. Use the ones that came with the car. In places, the OE undercover is thinner. The PartsGeek one is thicker in those areas and might be even more durable. However, because vacuum forming process is not as accurate, the holes might be a little off. That's easily remedied with a round file.

The PartsGeek one is definitely worth the price difference.

Even on a vehicle under new car warranty, it depends on the dealer to comp it. Some will do it as "goodwill".

*This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
*Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin. (Some 2010 Prius vehicles may exhibit an engine under cover that has warped at the front edge after oil maintenance has been completed)...for VINs listed

...after that it becomes a Dealership goodwill thing. Their choice.

 

I just bought one from Parts Geek. I have a friend that is a master mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership that is going to put it on today. I could do it but a lift will make it much easier. I will let you know how it turns out. 38 dollars against 259 dollars is a no Brainer for me.

 

I went to change my under car shield and i saw that the Toyota dealer was at fault. The removed the screw in the oil door but they didn't remove the retainer pin and bust jerked it down. I removed the pin and reinstalled it and it's all good. They wanted to charge me close to 400 dollars to change it. I drove it straight to the dealer and they offered to replace it for free but I told them it was not necessary. He gave me 2 full service oil changes for free. So in conclusion if your oil for is cracked by the retainer pin that holds it up then it was done by whoever changed the oil.

 

I'm having this issue in my 2007 Prius. When I purchased it in August 2014 (70K miles), the guard was hanging down in a spot. I asked them to fix it, since I was worried it would get caught on a curb or something else that would rip/warp it further. Well, it's been two years, and the fixes have been like a game of Whack-A-Mole; I'd take it in, they'd "fix" it, and then it would drop down in another spot.

Finally, someone at the dealership recently told me that the guard can't really BE anchored, because anchor points are torn or missing. The suggested repair estimate is $400 (!), but I don't understand if the points are missing, then what would the new guard be anchored TO? (insert string of expletives here.)

From reading this thread, it seems the guard is not essential, but if it's hanging down, is it problematic? If I just leave it as is, is that better than removing it? My plan is to have an independent garage look at it when I bring her in for transmission flush.
