St. Louisans love their cars, or so the expression goes. It just doesn't apply so much to downtown. A sizable number of loft dwellers say they'd rather not own a set of wheels. And many downtown workers say they'd take public transportation to avoid parking and gasoline costs — if only they didn't need to meet clients or run errands during the day. Last week, one of the Ride Guys — in this case, Elisa — tried out a program for those seeking to be carless. It's called WeCar. Enterprise Rent-A-Car started it last month for downtowners who want quick access to a vehicle without the cost of insurance or parking. The cost is a one-time $35 membership and a $10-an-hour rental fee. The concept has caught on in other cities — Seattle, Chicago, Boston and others, where public transportation is more of a way of life. WeCar also has a program on the Washington University campus.
