Removing the headliner

Check this out. The beginning part should be of service.

 

Very nice! Thanks for the write up!, I was lookin to rip out the headliner eventually to get some sound deadening up there. It looks pretty easy and straigtforward.

 

That hardest part is getting those plastic plug things out. The second hardest part is not losing them once they're out. :lol:

For me, I suspect not losing them would be really the hardest part.

The instructions are great. I don't intend to remove the headliner in the near future, but who knows.

I've finally been able to take out the headliner to dampen the roof with a layer of Secondskin Damplifier as well as added a layer of R-7.5 heat insulation to the headliner itself.

The trickiest parts to remove were the four grab handles above the doors. The cover over the clip is extremely tight and require quite a bit of force to pry out. Everything else was pretty easy after that, though I wouldn't describe it as straightforward.

I didn't want to disconnect all the wirings that were taped onto the headliner so I left the headliner inside the car as I worked. Turned out not to be too bad. Just took a bit more time to move around, that's all.

Putting the headliner back was not terribly difficult, once I figured out to first plug in the visor clips to hold the front end up. It probably would have been much easier if I had removed the various pillar covers first, but I was too lazy to do that.

Hard to tell the difference since I've only test driven it once this morning on my way to work. I'll have to do a dB check on the stretch of road that I first tested the car out before I did any SD. I suppose there has to be a difference, but how noticeable or audible it is depends on too many factors. Besides, I already have SD in the doors, floor, and trunk, so the roof is just icing on the cake, so to speak. I was more interested in heat shielding the roof more than sound dampening it, but since I already had the headliner removed, I might as well do both.

After the doors, my suggestion is to do the floor. You'll have to take out all the seats and center console if you want to do a thorough job. A good day's worth of work, in my experience.

Was it worth the expense? I got my SD from Secondskin, so it wasn't too expensive. I wouldn't have been able to do as thorough a cover (80 sf so far) had I used Dynamat.

Was it worth the work? To me, absolutely. Just make sure you have lots of cold beer in the fridge while you're at it...

Great Job! Did the sound deadening and heat insulation materials make the headliner too thick at any points and not fit?

Also, now that you have had it in place for a few weeks, what has been your observations on sound/heat reduction?

Hi guys. My 2008 Prius is being repaired for hail damage and for that they are replacing the roof. They claim the car is ready but I there were several details one of them being a sagging headliner. Since you guys have a lot of experience with that, I was hoping you can give me some guidance on what's normal sagging. Is an inch too much for a 2008? Is the fix to replace the headliner? Thx.
