I've got a buggered drivers side drive axle (actually just the threads the castle nut goes onto).

Anyway, I took the complete drive axle out, removed the boots, inner CV joint but cannot figure out the trick to removing the outer joint.

    Any advice?

There is no trick. Toyota consider the drive shafts as complete units. That CV joint is not designed to come off or apart.

You can get an 'Outer Joint Assembly' that doesn't include the inner joint components, but it's actually more expensive than a pre-assembled full drive shaft.

Axle Assembly: MSRP $449.32/Champion ToyotaWorld $341.48
Outer Joint Assembly: MSRP $585.58/TW price $445.04
