My 2012 has door edge guards that I believe are a Toyota accessory. There is what looks like thin black adhesive tape. I just replaced a damaged door and rather that buy a whole new set of guards I want to remove what is on the car any suggestions to what is the best way to remove the edge guards and adhesive pinstripes
I have a Cobalt heat gun that I can set for like 200°. That generally won't hurt the paint unless you dwell on it for a super long time and you're just trying to heat up the tape which is what this is You don't want to melt it You just want to get it nice and warm so edge of it peels up with a plastic scraper once you get that edge up you've got it made You can just keep lightly running your wand across there or the heat gun and a little more warm and a little more warm as you're gently peeling it up and then you're good and then pick your poisons and wipe up the residue I have a gallon container of the active ingredient in goof off works very well for all of these types of cleanups then you can buff and wax and do whatever you're going to do I guess.
Just tried my harbor freight heat gun on high setting. It started to brown and then bubble the door edge trim. It pulled away pretty clean from the paint. I decided to rip off the rest and the foam tape stayed on the door. That came off pretty easily with a little heat as well. Pulling the heated plastic off was cleaner as for the pinstripes the heat didn’t soften them. They have probably been sun baked for many years. I tried some IPA and now goo gone. I soaked a strip of paper towel in goo gone and it broke up the pinstripe in a few minutes. It will be a time consuming task to remove all the stripes but I can wait for warmer weather. Thanks again
