It's just a thing I'm amused with. I like how I roll up to the gas pump (Costco), without turning off the PiP, pump in about 6-7 gallons then start driving off in about 2 seconds of my card door closing while the other cars around me are still pumping gas - even the guy that pulled in at the same time with me. All that in under 3min. It's stupid, but it's a little game I play like an F1 pitstop. Just like gaming the PiP for maximum daily mpg.
by the time i need gas, i've forgotten how to do it, and have to learn all over again. takes forever. the latest thing is when you slide your credit card through, it asks, 'is this a debit card'?
How long does it take to shut it down and restart? Play by the rules on that one? Yeah I know, EV mode and all that. But gasoline is sneaky stuff, don't mess around with it.
Yea, I do just keep it in EV when refueling. I feel it's as risky as me leaving my other car in the ACC mode, so I can continue listening to talk radio while pumping. Unless someone here comes and tell me that it's super dangerous and that people have died doing this, I'll probably continue. The lines are always long and I feel like I'm doing everyone and myself a favor by getting in and out as fast as I can. Would be nice if they're was a leader board for times-haha.
Where I live, CUV's guzzling up 20 gallons are everywhere. I don't really need to do anything special. I will beat most people by half the time almost every fill up.
207 V hybrid system plus the regular 12 V bus, cannot be same risk...plus, as Mendel said, it's illegal (at least here)
There was someone a few years back, talking about refueling a regular Prius without shutdown. His logic was that shutdown resets the computers, at restart you're running in "open loop", vs "closed loop"? My take: life's too short, to second-guess all these regulations, determine which do or don't apply for you. Simple, cross-the-board rules, that may prevent immolation, hey why not.
My fuel log paperwork, Trip and ScanGauge resets, etc., keep me off the leaderboard. I prefer leaving pumps displaying comparatively small refill dollar amounts, hoping to rub it in for any gas hog coming up next.
That's funny. Then again, maybe the next guy would look at it and think this guy can't afford a full tank - haha. My home city's gas prices are about $0.22 - $0.45 more than Costco gas at work, so sometimes I'm only filling up one gallon so I can get to work. Pretty sure anyone seeing that will think the guy was too poor to fill up.
Your other car has a high voltage battery powering things? ACC on your other car compares to ACC on the Prius, not Ready or EV mode. You can listen to your Prius radio in ACC mode, you know.
With leaving it on, I'd be more concerned about the unlikely event that the engine starts because the heater is running, or the car decides it's time to recycle the fuel. It's much more likely with the regular Prius which is why I don't leave mine on, but even with the PIP it's possible.
If the engine starts, that means the high voltage MG1 is powered, first as a starter motor and then as a generator.
Both MGs are pretty well sealed against fuel fumes. I'd be more worried if the HV cooling fan were to kick on; it isn't sealed. I always turn my Prius off whenever filling up; also it's the law here in NH.
Yeah anything could kick in. AC for example. Superman's cape, Elvis' blue suedes, pumping gas: they've all got rules.
