Red Triangle Warning

    My prius threw up code P0A93 (inverter cooling system performance) the other day. I noticed the tank for coolant was low near the inverter, topped it off, and drove for about 40 miles before the code turned off. 2 days later and not much more driving the red triangle appeared again. I haven’t been able to take it somewhere to test for codes, but the coolant looks fine now. When I was looking around under the hood I noticed frayed wiring coming from the sensor circuit breaker number 1. Looks like something chewed through it. Is it possible this happened that recently? Has anyone had experience with a similar wiring issue? How screwed am I? Picture attached

    Yes that's a big problem You're going to need to get that unwrapped and straightened out pronto and see if there's any more damage look back by the HV battery the 12 volt battery anywhere you can see up under and around the dash have you found torn up napkins and things like that in the car You need to pull out the in cabin air filter behind the glove box Just squeeze and drop the box squeeze the tabs on the white tray and pull the panel out Is the air filter almost non-existent or all chewed up You need to get the shop vac with the computer tools and suck all that mess out of the air box this is very bad.

    I checked behind the glove box- no other signs of damage, and filter was in OK shape (dirty but not in tatters or chewed). I took the car to Toyota. They seem unsure if they’ll be able to repair just the wire or if it’s a whole harness issue. Car might be totaled if they can’t repair the singular wire. From the photo does it seem repairable if anyone has had experience with gen 2 wiring issues?

    I'm pretty sure that can be repaired but the question that would be causing me trouble sleeping is what caused the wire to heat up to the point of destruction. If I got an answer to that question, I'd be happier repairing the damage.

    Does that look more like heat damage, or more like teeth damage?

    Looks like mouse damage. Just have to open it up and splice in repairs and see where you are at. Heat shrink butt splices or solder and heat shrink.

    Dealers don’t like to quote “maybe” repairs, they go for the whole harness (which could be bought on eBay or the local salvage yard).

    I would put equal priority on getting rid of the mice. The green cubes are pretty effective.

    Toyota, for whatever reason, pushes parallel splices rather than butt splices. Elektroingenieur gave the details in this post:
    While Toyota uses solder extensively inside rigid nonmoving assemblies (on circuit boards and the like), they avoid it (like auto and marine manufacturers do generally) for joining flexible stranded wires that are subject to motion. They use crimped connections for those.

    I must have been thinking of a different car, as that does look like teeth rather than heat. At least I can sleep easy now. ;):sleep:
