Well, it's official, Toyota Canada is also recalling the car for the side curtain airbags. Looks like they will install "retention brackets" over the modules to prevent it from entering someone's head. Got my notice today for Pearl S. For those wondering, it covers "certain 2010-2012 model year Prius vehicles".

They don't yet have the parts, so this is a notice of what they will do once they have the parts.

Hi David. I got my notice too. Guess we should drive a leetle more cautiously between now and the fix, lol.

I posted about this yesterday, but no one seemed to notice, sniff. :(

(The site's search engine is abysmal, I couldn't find my thread if I typed in the exact title, until I also specified "by member".)

Ditto. Got it yesterday. I'm not sure I understand the "This has been observed when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied for a period of time."

It makes it sound like you're ok if you drive it all the time and should be more cautious if the car is sitting for days or weeks at a time. The scientific curiosity in me is wondering "what is the correlation between chamber separation and the car parked and unoccupied for a period of time".

I believe it has to do with temperatures and pressure. If sitting for extended periods in hot weather. The gas in the air bag expands putting pressure on the current brackets and fatiguing them (cracks that are appearing). Drive the car frequently and the cabin temperature will be lower ( or hopefully you are not driving in a convection oven), lowering the time at which the brackets experience higher pressure.

So for the scientist: PV=nRT with constant volume (direct pressure temperature correlation) ;).

They're being deliberately vague. Assuming it really is a problem of stress on metal caused by P getting too high in good ole PV=nRT, that "period of time" doesn't have to be "days or weeks" for T--thus also P-- to climb high on a sunny summer day. The more times the temperature goes from high to low and back, the more fatigue of the metal canister becomes a factor. That's why it took a few years for the problem to show up, I suspect.

Probably. The good thing is that the car was garaged most of its life. The bad thing is that now it's parked outside in the full sun all day with the driver's side getting the full brunt.

Weird. I have not received anything from Toyota about the recall at all.

It's only in Canada so far. Like the Tetley Tea commercial, except with shrapnel. o_O

I looked my car up on the Toyota Owner's website and it lists the airbag recall and states that parts are not yet available. I have not received a letter yet.

We need to support Canada Post, so extra letters are used whenever possible. ;)

Actually, Toyota Canada also mailed two letters for the reprogramming for the invertor, the FJ seatbelt retractor recall, and for the GII recall for whatever it was (too long ago for my challenged brain).

Well, this fix must require very high tech. components. Still haven't received the second letter. Three months so far.

Maybe a hockey goalie mask would be more apt. And if you get a tailgater, just take a leisurely shoulder check gander at 'em.

You might not need to do that if you employ the old school Jason style hockey mask:). If they see that staring at them, they'll think twice. Maybe throw a little red on for good measure ;).
