I'm imagining an LED display mounted in the rear window that displays current MPG.

Pretty sure that will turn as many heads as this

What will happen is that the mouth breathers in the JJ Machoballs jacked up trucks will see you accelerating onto a freeway on-ramp at 20 MPG and forever be telling anyone who listens that a Prius only gets 20 mpg.

We have enough problems with people getting mad and tailgaiting us, this would make things worse.

I'm sure the scanguage's LCD can be hacked to displayed in a external LED display. Any takers?

    Something like this perhaps?

"Easy to install, no screws or tools required. Select and display any
message in an instant with a single button press. Program your own
messages from the remote control using characters, numbers and
symbols. Show instant messages (98 to choose from). Scrolls the LED
message in one of three different speeds. Save your favorite messages."

It doesnt show live stats which is what we're looking for. Getting less than 10MPG during acceleration is the norm for any car, even the Prius. Once you get to the speed limit and cruise with the ICE off, it's gonna show 99999.99MPG. I think the LED should also display EV, Hybrid, and Regen modes in addition to live MPG.

This type of display is illegal, only static non-lighted is legal.

This is all for fun, and hardly worth getting worked up into a lather over.

Look closely at the display, 9 characters are shown.

57 MPG, 64 MPG, 73 MPG, and even 999 MPG would easily fit without
    scrolling. :cheer2:

    Voila, a static display!

Let's say it updated once every minute, or two, or three...
that might pass muster for the purpose of MPG display anyway.

You probably wouldn't want to display instantaneous MPGs anyway,
successive numbers even at 3 minute sampling would be all over the
    place. Better to use two of the SC's other MPG readouts;
    * current trip MPG - MPG since the car was last turned on
    * today's MPG - MPG since the last "overnight" period of inactivity (~8
hrs.) including any number of induvudual trips.

$40 looks like a real good price for the sign.
It would be a good idea to install a 12V accessory port in the hatch area.

I was thinking of this idea a few days ago, but I'd really like to see it on a license plate.

Then really nothing dynamic is legal to display. Even if we could, it might be considered a distraction or bring on a road rage event. Most drivers zoom past me even if I'm going over the limit in the right lane. Imagine how PO'd they would be if they could see my avg MPG. I think most already know.

Is the Lambo posted in the original post a concept? Please do provide some more information! :)

Also, I'm not at all surprised that Lambos, and the likes will be going hybrid in the next coming years: www wired com / autopia / 2010 / 03 / ferrari-hy-kers

Excuse all the spaces, but the site won't let me link outside of itself until I reach 5 posts. :(

Forgot to add: from an outsider's perspective (non-Prius owner), the rear window MPG display would probably invoke envy in other drivers... Proceed with caution. :)

LOL That's cute video, however they don't allow Lights on Wheels in Oregon,

The Oregon State DOT Thinks people would confuse your car for a police or emergency vehicle..

(Yes the Government is going to save us all from our own stupidity LOL)

Apparently there are smarter people in California? :)

How lights on wheels looks like a Police or emergency vehicle I don't know?

wow you can even change the message while you're driving. Here I thought driving while talking on a cellphone was bad imagine typing on a computer, taking pictures, uploading the pic to the computer all while driving. That's about as bad as driving blind.

I was born in Portland, so it pains me to say this, but we in California are deemed smart enough to pump our own gas.:D

OTOH, If I were to be exiled from California, I would seriously consider Oregon again.

I suspect that people behind a Prius would think the Prius driver was bragging by showing off their MPG's in the rear window. It would feed into the whole "smugness" thing.
