I transport meals on wheels from a kitchen 25 miles away and must use 10 boxes for the food. I have used a covered pick up and a Honda Odyssey van for a number of years. I think the Pirus I have on order will do with the back seat folded flat. There is the occasional leakage. In the van, I ordered a rubber mat with edges to prevent spills from Weathertect that worked fine. I need one that will cover the entire back area in the Pirus with the rear seat folded forward.
The ones I can find on the internet cover only the rear hatch area. Does anyone have a solution or know where I can purchase this full matt?

    A. B. were you at Hybridfest? I spoke with a man and a woman who told me almost the exact same story. It would make my day to learn that checking out the space in the back of Priapus helped sell a Prius.

Thanks Evan, I think it would work and maybe I may bite the bullit but the price is $175 and quite high to me. I don't get delivery until next week and I may seek other ways to get this cover. There is a local company that makes floor mats and I may carry the car to them for idears.

Depending upon how OEM you need/want this to look you could probably make your own with some rubber backed carpet remnants cut to the proper shape/size with loops for the head restraints to hold it up and a slit to lay down the seats.

Arthur (Sigma guy) has to import those items from Japan so with that shipping cost, your shipping cost, product to cost, exchange rate, and any profit he takes the prices can get a tad high.

I too deliver meals from time to time and found a mat at Home Depot that covers the entire area and has done a good job for me. Think it was about $20.

Evan, I have the molded rubber mat from my Odyssey the may be the best I can do is to cut it to fit the Prius. Thanks.

There is also a temporary fix heavy duty plastic sheeting cut to cover and may be a few of those suction hook things to hang it on. If you use something hot to make the holes you will have a "grommet" to reinforce the hook points. Butt ugly but you can save up for something that looks good as well! Rube Goldberg was my great aunts mothers friend!

Seasalsa, I think you have hit the nail on the head. I will go to to Home Depot today! I notice you are only a year younger than I am. (I was born in 1931) I have not had any experence with the Prius but am a true car nut and keep up with new facts. I am interested with your experence with the Prius as to long tirm use and fuel mileage. I live about 5 miles out of Easley SC and 10 miles from Greenville SC so when I leave home it is at least 5 miles and usually 25 + miles. I have had 4 vans over the last 8 years as well as a Ford Ranger pick up. I do most of my own auto maintence because I am too peculiar to trust others.
Please let me have your opinions, thanks.

Thanks for the idea! I like the Rube Goldberg thinking!

Evan, I am impressed with the very precise job you have done with your mileage! I surely hope for even close to this record. My son in law is quitely making fun of me saying gas is only a small part of the cost of running an auto. I think with the record you have made I can prove him wrong. Maybe the Prius will help a little to stop use of foriegn oil.

Long Term Use and Fuel Mileage.

Long Term Use: Since January of 04 the only time my car has been to a dealer was for the 3 recalls. I have almost 40k miles and replaced the OEM tires at about 30k. I do my own maintenance and have bought my filters; engine air, cabin and oil on eBay.

Fuel Mileage: My normal commute is about 5 miles so I don’t get great mileage, (low 40’s) but that is a lot better than the Mercury Villager I previously drove that had a lifetime MPG of 17.5.

Seasalsa, I went to Home Depot today and found not only a large rubber backed moor mat that is about 4 X 6 feet but many shades of tan 6 X 8 mats that would look good in the Pirus with the tan leather. the Toyota dealer told me it would not arrive until Thursday , 8/10 so I will have time to select the best mat. Many thanks, A. B. Hair
