range for new Prius Prime?

battery is supposed to be about 50% bigger = about 37 miles epa.

forget the gas tank size, but you should get around 5-600 miles range.

a lot has changed in the gen 5 prime, some good, some bad. you should really read all the threads, there's a lot of good info, but a lot we still don't know yet.

unfortunately, japanese specs don't translate well to north american

 

Japan WLTP gives better results than EPA.

 

Can we base anything on the ‘% improvement’ comments?

 

earlier on, people were translating that to 25 miles x 1.5 = 37.5 miles.

since most get more than the epa 25 in gen 4 outside of winter, it is hopeful to see 40-50 miles, although the 17 and 19 wheels will kill some of that

 

I thought the OP was asking about maximum range, gas + electric. While electric is maybe 12.5 miles more, the 2023 manual says the gas tank is only 10.6 gallons. My 2017 manual says 11.4 gallons but I seem to remember most of the other literature when I bought it was saying 11.2? If the tank has dropped by 0.8 (or 0.6) gallons and I generally get 50 to 60 mpg with my 2017 it seems like the 2023 total range will drop by something like 27.5 miles.

Overall an insignificant difference to most people.

Manufacturers do list a range somewhere that is listed tank volume times combined fuel economy rating. How full you can get the tank also falls under YMMV.

On trips, most people will want to take break before a Prius tank nears empty. Some want to know the range to gauge how often they'll be stopping at the gas station with daily driving. With a PHEV, that can be months with even a tiny tank.

 

Car and driver also says about 40 miles on battery only.

Did Toyota under report the EV range in Europe of the old model to the degree they did in the US?

Yes. After the changes to the test for what gets reported on the window sticker, Toyota appeared to choose to post a lower value for the Prius. Which translates to a lower official range for the Prime. Don't know if the practice was the same with Toyota EU.

 

Gen 5 Prius HEV (43-L (11.4-gal) fuel tank) and Prius Prime PHEV (40-L (10.6-gal) fuel tank) have about the same combined range or perhaps the HEV has a slightly longer range. BEV range on the PHEV is 44 miles (17" wheels) or 36 miles (19" wheels).

Gen 4 Prius Prime PHEV (43-L (11.4-gal) fuel tank) with its 25-mile BEV range is the unbeatable king of range and fuel efficiency. I get about a 70-mpg actual fuel economy in HEV driving and a 35-mile range in BEV driving. My combined range on my Gen 4 Prius Prime PHEV is about 850 miles (1,400 kilometers).

I am getting 85 miles EV range on a single charge from the Escape PHEV now.

 

That must be downhill driving. I haven't seen 8 mi/kWh even in summertime 25-mph driving on a Prius Prime or Model 3.

 

I am sure there are some downhills mixed. That number is the current lifetime EV efficiency on our 4-month-old Escape PHEV with 2480.6 miles on ODO.
