... I double dog dare you, be my guest, go right ahead, don't give it a second thought pulling your EV, straight into your garage: https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/tesla-spontaneously-erupts-flames-california-highway Samuel, '04 Ruthiemobile
Not much of a fan of radical EVangelists, but I don't think that they've caught up with ICE powered cars just yet.....
VW use to make engines out of magnesium. BangShift.com Magnesium VW Engine Block Fire At least water's an option with an EV. With more modern cars, you have to worry about the head lights(Toyota Tundra Pickup Recall for Headlights That Catch Fire - Consumer Reports), window switches (Toyota recalls over 7 million cars over potential fire hazard), and starter battery (1.9 Million Toyota RAV4 SUVs Investigated for Battery Fire Risk). That's just with Toyota. Best to park no car in your garage.
I had a Saab 9000 that burst into flames while I was driving it home from the airport in Hong Kong. I caused a 6-km tailback, and melted some of the road. Embarrassingly, several of my friends, and one guy I really didn't like, were in the tailback and were guided slowly past me and the smoking remains of the car. I asked one of the firefighters what he thought the problem might be, thinking he might say "fuel leak" or "electrical fault" or something. He said, "Well..... Your problem here, mate, is that it's a 10-year-old Saab." Succinct and to the point. What's weird is - get this - that Saab was not electric. Spooky.
Wasn't there a problem five or ten years ago with a new model of Ferrari that kept bursting into flames? If I recall correctly, the brakes would overheat and set fire to the glue that held some composite panels together, and the whole car would melt into a pool of goo.
From a link posted to another thread here long ago: "U.S. VEHICLE FIRE TRENDS AND PATTERNS ... Abstract In 2003-2007, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 287,000 vehicle fires per year. These fires caused an average of 480 civilian deaths, 1,525 civilian injuries, and $1.3 billion in direct property damage annually. Cars, trucks and other highway vehicles (meaning a vehicle designed for highway use, not that the fire occurred on a highway) accounted for 93% of the vehicle fires and 92% of the vehicle fire deaths." http://tkolb.net/FireReports/US_VehFirTrePat2003-2007.pdf That is a vehicle fire every two minutes. Lots and lots of car and pickup makers have needed to tell customers of particular models to park outdoors until they can get recalls performed.
Yes, but what if you ignore all the ICE ones and only look at the EV ones? Then you'll find that 100% of vehicle fires are EVs.
The irony of course is that hybrid cars have both an EV and a gas powered system, which hilariously makes them a greater fire hazard than both gas-powered and electricity powered: "The site found that hybrid vehicles had the most fires per 100,000 sales at 3474.5. There were 1529.9 fires per 100k for gas vehicles and just 25.1 fires per 100k sales for electric vehicles." https://www.autoweek.com/news/a38225037/how-much-you-should-worry-about-ev-fires
Entirely false claim... Of course if you had taken the time to find a reference to back up your claim you'd realize that.
One great thing about being a habitual "collector of stuff" is that I couldn't fit a car in my garage unless I had at least 2 days warning to rearrange things!!
Old Saabs had this awesome idea of putting the hot side of the turbo right up close to the soft plastic casing of the 12v battery. VW eventually noticed that aluminum casting became less expensive, no need to use magnesium anymore. All their new designs from 1972 used aluminum blocks, though they did continue to manufacture magnesium type 1 blocks for decades after.
Crap!!! Double tap. Perhaps this is why the current administration dislikes standard capacity magazines!
Oh, look. This only just made it into Australian news - there aren't that many RAMs here. Ram Recalls Heavy-Duty Diesel Pickups Over Engine Fire Risk – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth It's almost like it's not just EVs that go on fire.
Motor vehicle fire recalls are almost uncountable. Here is just a very recent sampling, not including any of the 'big' historic recalls back before anybody had modern EVs: FIRE RECALLS - Jack Ward Fire Consultants - Fire Investigations More than 133,000 Nissan, Infiniti models recalled due to fire risk - Los Angeles Times BMW Recalls Roughly a Million Vehicles at Risk of Catching Fire - The New York Times BMW recalls 1 million vehicles for fire risk - The Center for Auto Safety Hyundai and Kia Recall 500,000 Cars Because of Spontaneous Combustion Risk - Bloomberg Why So Many Hyundai and Kia Vehicles Get Recalled for Fire Risk - Consumer Reports https://www.thestreet.com/automotive/subaru-recalls-nearly-one-quartet-million-ascents-due-to-fire-risk Subaru Recalling 270,000 2019–2022 Ascent SUVs over Fire Risk https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ford-recalls-more-than-500000-cars-over-fire-risk/ Ford recalls 634,000 vehicles worldwide over fire risks | Reuters ... and just one of the old big ones: Toyota recalls over 7 million cars over potential fire hazard
Also, @asjoseph never mentioned this, did he? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spontaneous_human_combustion But did any maternity hospitals issue a recall on the humans who were born in them? No! They did not! We only hear about it on serious non-mainstream news investigations like The UnXplained With William Shatner and stuff on The History Channel. I am also willing to bet that it is on zerohedge somewhere. Clearly it is a conspiracy by The Man.
