I was on my way back from Florida, near Daytona my "add Fuel" message and beep came on, pip was flashing. I drove less than 5 miles, looking for a fuel exit and the car died on me right in the middle of rush hour traffic on I-95. Everythiing on the dash lit up. I continued to drive at 50 mph, made an exit, came to a stop light just as it changed green, and then just pooped out in the middle of the street. Pushed the ole girl to the gas pump...it took 12.10 gallons to fill up. Now, driving back to North Carolina I noticed that I had driven 494 miles on the MFD, and getting 49.6 MPG. The problem was I was showing 4 pips on the fuel gague, and figured that could not be right, so I found a gas station, filled up, took 9.90 gallons of gas. Can the fuel gague now be off?, Do I need to have the dealer check it? Thanks in advance for any advise. Howie
This is a common issue and there are numerous posts about it. Search for "guess guage" to view some. Bottom line is when 1 PIP is showing, get gas soon, when 1 PIP is flashing GET GAS NOW! Last night I read a good rule of thumb for filling up (I think from Fire Engineer - apologies if I am wrong): Miles per Gallon times 10 = miles per tank in summer Miles per Gallon times 9 = miles per tank in winter With my lousy mileage it is probably a good rule of thumb for me.
It doesn't hold 12.1 US gallons. Either you found an inaccurate gas pump or you topped off. Topping off saturates the vapor canister and greatly increases hydrocarbon emissions. The ability to drive an additional mile or two is not worth the additional smog.
