    Hello everyone!

I am posting this here because I do not yet understand how this app works and do not want to post in the wrong place. This is attempt 5 to post. I have been studying my 2008 Prius for multiple reasons. OCD & my being meticulous are probably the biggest reasons and so that I notice if anything changes. I was cleaning my engine bay in "ready state" and just listening to all the weird grumbling sounds that the MG's make when the ICE engages to replenish the hybrid battery and the ICE turned off and all I could hear was a sound that 100% reminded me of the old desktop PC hard drive when the CPU is maxed out. Normal or out of the ordinary? I know the engine sounds like a sewing machine, but does everyone get vehicle surge when the ICE engages and does the E-CVT sit and grumble when it is idling? I think at 150k miles now, maybe I need to change the "transmission" fluid with 4 qts of fresh World Standard? Could that be why it sounds grumpy or is this common at my milage? First time Prius owner obviously... Thanks in advance!

P.S. If this needs moved to gen 2 technical discussion, I understand. I just thought I would start here because I'm clueless. Thank you for understanding. -Derek

always a good idea to change the tranny fluid on a regular basis, but can't tell you if it will help with surging, that is a pretty common gen 2 complaint.
as for noises, there are so many things operating on a prius, even when everything is turned off. it is likely normal as well.
i think the o/m lists all of them, iirc.

sorry, can't help with posting issues, perhaps someone else on a phone.

    all the best!(y)

Are you possibly hearing the inverter water pump? (behind the headlight, but pumps thru the inverter on top of the eCVT.) If it is "growling", I would want to change it, rather than get stranded somewhere. Other sounds could be the brake actuator pump, but that should come and go, and not be a constant noise.

I think the "Prius Chat mobile app" was a hopeless failure; I'm surprised that it is still available.
    My suggestion: Stop using it.
The ~100 previous posts you made apparently worked OK.

As for the other stuff, yes a new post probably should be put somewhere else.....with an appropriate title that actually has a clue as to what the actual subject IS.

Your description of what you're hearing were entertaining and "sounds" pretty typical... I like the sewing machine analysis, never thought about that one but makes perfect sense.

It'd be fun if somebody created a post of all the sounds under the hood with the exact part that makes the sound. Maybe there's a YouTube video that does that somewhere? Maybe we could have a "Name that Sound" contest? :)

As for the ICE power surge, yes... That happens sometimes, but seems to be more defined by driving conditions/not consistent.

The pump was just done at 147k, and it only has 153k now. It sounds like it's coming from near my intake manifold? Super strange. People have been kidding me, telling me my computer sounds angry! LOL

This is my first successful post... The rest were just comments. Thank you for your 2 cents. Further more, I titled the thread just fine I believe. If it needs moved report it and they will move it. Good Day

I was just trying to be helpful asking a moderator to re-title & move. I did not mean to offend you. I thought you would get more useful answers from other knowledgeable owners.

BTW I have Sam on my ignore list to cut down on forum clutter.

Actually I was initially a little confused until I unignored Sam Spade.I do not seem to miss much with him ignored, but the forum experience here is much more enjoyable. :)(y)

That was explained to me a while back by a moderator as I did think it was rude until it was explained to me and I voiced my opinion to Bisco I believe it was for doing exactly that and just trying to be helpful to some one.

I was seriously asking SamSpade to report it instead of spouting off at me. He just has nothing nice to say and his comment did nothing to answer my actual concerns / questions regarding my Prius. He just restated the obvious and shared his opinions regarding my placement of the thread in the only place I could and the app I am using to access the forum.

My questions are legit and I thought my thread was labeled just fine for a "noobie". I also acknowledged that it may have needed to be moved and that I understood that. I simply put it out there that it was placed where it was because it wouldn't allow me to post it anywhere else. All he needed to do was the same thing you did and ask someone to correct the placement. He's been on here long enough to know that. He just had to go look at my profile and then add his 2 cents that had nothing to do with my car and everything to do with him feeding his own ego.

I appreciate you having it placed where it belongs. Thank you!

P.S. Humphrey Bogart, not that you care or will have anything positive to say. I am camping out of my Prius and working on my bucket list while I fight off non small cell lung cancer. I have no other way than my phone and this "prius chat app" that failed so miserably to access the forum. I believe it's my lack of knowledge, and not the app as I said before. I am just sharing my opinion once again though as you shared yours.

Thanks in advance to anyone who is or has already actually been supportive of my learning to be part of the PC community as well as my getting to know this Prius while we are on our adventure from sea to shining sea. I have been calling her Penelope, and we went to the summit at pikes peak yesterday and I didn't even use my oxygen once!

She didn't miss a beat and climbed like a mountain goat! I used "B mode" the whole way back down as it was intended. I was the only 1 in a line of 5 vehicles (One of which was another gen 2 who had to park.) to pass the brake inspection point at (for brake rotors) a cool 175° Fahrenheit. The other 3 that were coming down in front of me (New Chevy SUV's with red Colorado fleet plates.) got parked for their rotors being over the acceptable 300° and the ranger told me that it's usually the opposite because ordinary vehicles can use 1st or low gear and their engines compression to hold them back. He said the ones in front of me in the rented Chevy's were a group of self proclaimed electrical engineers and they all had the brake rotors of their rentals over 500°. (Mind you, the Chevy's come flying past me after their brakes cooled doing probably 45 mph like they were going to a fire!) The Ranger asked me how I did it with a "hybrid"?

So I explained to him that B on the shifter is for descending a steep grade. He said he intended to pass that information along as 90% of hybrids coming down get parked because they boil their brake fluid.

Moral of this story is, don't overlook that B on your shifter if you ever get the chance to go and don't want to smoke your brakes! It was the best $15 I have ever spent and the absolute coolest place I personally have ever been in my entire life! My HV battery seems so much healthier and my ICE is running much less and quieter as well now too after being in "B mode" for 18 miles while descending over 1 mile in elevation from the summit!

Me on the other hand, my lips are chapped and they were actually blue at one point. I'm also a little dehydrated, BUT I MADE IT and I had the time of my life!

    Thank God!

    Thanks for reading. -Derek & Penelope 313013-bogart_spade_super.jpeg 20180909_173754.jpeg 20180909_185351.jpeg 20180909_174308.jpeg 20180909_175034.jpeg

I do not use any app. I use the web browser to access PriusChat on my iPhone though. That may be another option for you to consider.

Many people camp in their Prius and enjoy it. Oh, and welcome to PriusChat.

I had ignored him as well. It's obviously useless. I am glad I am not the only one who feels he has nothing worth while to offer!
