Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender folks are more likely to consider hybrid cars, according to a Harris Interactive survey.

i think thats a kind of to be expected issue - going with the fact that more liberal people buy prii (by the numbers) and that more GLBT are liberal leaning, you end up with this kind of statistic.

i'll take any real niches we can get, though. I'll see if the local clubs want to have a raffle =)

Whenever I see a story like that the letters B S come to mind and I don't mean Bachelor of Science. They conducted it online and they actually expect to get real, hard data from that format? C'mon. If you don't really know who is responding to the survey, you don't know if they're truthful or just pulling your leg. I can't believe this kind of crap gets any credence at all. The news agencies pick up on it because everyone loves to read that kind of junk. Utter nonsense.

Another way of saying, "If you drive a hybrid, you must be gay." Grunt grunt, I'm gonna go buy me a Hemi to seperate myself as much as possible from those faggots. (used here to make a point).

Gay/Lesbian/Bi/TransGender/Inlightened. Period. That's a crowd I am proud to mingle with.

Though I have to admit that my wife and I laughed our asses off the other day watching Oprah with George Clooney. Apperantly, during the filming of Ocean's 12, Clooney and Brad Pitt were exchanging practical jokes. At one point, Cloony put a bumper sticker on the back of Pitt's Prius reading "I'm gay and I vote." Right, wrong, just plain funny.

I can just see a few goofballs from one of the American car companies finding that poll and seeing the opportunity to stigmatize Prius owners. "That'll fix those jerks for not buying our cars" Probably some dealership twerps.

I agree with you about generic online surveys (like the "polls" taken on AOL or Yahoo). They are not accurate by any means. However, I believe Harris Interactive uses a technique comparable to telephone polling. Their online surveys are sent to people who subscribe and are given a username and password. Perhaps a few people try to skew results by subscribing with several e-mail addresses and/or multiple computers. But according to what I've read, Harris accounts for this in its results.

With AOL/Yahoo polls, all one must do is delete a cookie and respond again. I could do this all day if I wanted. Webpage-based "polls" are a complete crock. They are not really polls at all. ;)

Brian, the problem is not the method or science involved in polling, I'm sure that Harris Interactive does a decent enough job of that. The problem is poll itself. Why does it even ask that question? It's like the daily show episode
By making a completely meaningless assertion, regardless of whether it's true or false, they grant validity to the question. Just like when you see commentaries about how Hybrids don't get as much MPG as "advertised"... when the real question should be how much BETTER a hybrid is than it's class equivalent (in real MPG)...

I guess I'm confused by the purpose of the poll. Sure, it's a fun fact knowing that 1,437 "GLBTs" are interested in hybrid technology, but what's the point? Are they trying to draw some correlation between sexual preferences and vehicle-buying habits? Drawing conclusions from correlations also requires a certain degree of logic. In other words, conclusions should not be formed based on numbers alone. You can have a positive correlation and the hypothesis can still be false.

There needs to be a distinction made between correlation and cause.

Also, even though the survey results were weighted to provide more "real-world" results, it could still be more representative if the sample sizes weren't so lopsided. 33 percent more "GLBTs" than hetero-sexuals were surveyed.

Of course, in the end, who cares! Only the marketing guys, I guess.

I couldn't have said it better myself, tideland_raj...matter of fact, I DIDN'T say it better myself. I don't really care if the GLBT crowd is important to companies selling goods or prefers the Prius over other cars, but I don't want to get lumped in with them and what the hell is the point of asking the question to begin with? You're gay if you drive a Prius? Frig that. I still have a sneaking suspicion that the American auto companies are behind this kind of nonsense, regardless of how they're behind it.

Yeah, it's annoying dealing with people trying to overcompensate for their insecurities by calling male Prius owners effeminite/gay.

If quarterly losses are any indication I'd sayd that the American auto companies are taking it from behind if nothing else. In the end it's money/value that talks not who's gay and who's driving what. Hybrids offer greater performance, good value, and (unfortunately the distant third in most people's car buying criteria) excellent fuel economy. The Prius, at least, seems to make few, if any, compromises. I would expect that smear campaigns are just indicative to the fact that GM and Ford are up to their necks in sh*te. Until they deliver something that consumers actually want they can waste their last dollars on smear campaigns. Hopefully they'll pull their heads out from where they're stuck and start catching up. It's getting embarassing.

Hey, I'm going to coin a new phrase/term for the modern vernacular:

"Giblets" (Copyright Sportbike Cowboy November 2, 2005)

THEY can ALL be lumped into one, very general, and new, category.

    Some examples of usage:

"Check out the weird skinny dude getting into the hybrid, he's probably a Giblet..."

"Son, the only people that drive those kinda cars are Giblets."
    "What are "Giblets" Paw?"
"Well Son, you know that crap inside the chickens we eat that ain't normal?"
    "Uh-huh.."
"They're people just like that son..."

Q: "What do yo call skinny males with beards who wear Birkenstock sandals with socks?"

    A: "Giblets"

It's typical that narrow minded, uninformed people will go around quoting stuff like this..

I've also seen considerable hostility espressed in an engineering tips forum toward hybrids... guess its old school thinking and they are uncomfortable with new technology..

    To whom are you referring?

Obviously the purpose of this survey is to indicate to Toyota that they could get a good return by targeting advertising specifically at the GLBT market--just like Ford gets its best return on advertising spend by targeting mouth-breathers who think the company still makes cars in America.

So let me get this straight (oh the pun).

    Skinny = gay
Short hair (clean cut) = gay
    No girfriend = gay
    Rainbow = gay
Ear ring in right ear = gay
Tight shirt (or pants) = gay
    Short shorts = gay
    Small glasses = gay
    Sandles with socks = gay
    Turtleneck sweater = extra gay
Color green (and pink, purple and any shade of all) = gay
    Listening to Enya = gay
and now driving a Prius = gay

I for one am breaking the mold and the only Trany in my Prius is the transmission. B)

Listen, everybody knows the preferred vehicle of choice for gay men is the VW Passat/ Audi A4 and the preferred lesbianmobile is the Subaru Outback. ;-)

i can easily beleive that the group mentioned, along with any other group concerned with the environment, quality, technology, and humanity would most definitely be interested in the hybrid movement

    Let me add one more:

Expressing colors in terms such as:

    Tangerine, Fuscia, etc. = FLAMER
