PurOL Synthetic oil

    Greetings!

    I've been following bisimoto's Hyperioniq modifications of a hyundai ioniq, and noticed that they used a special 0w20 synthetic motor oil.



    They're sold out on Amazon, but on Newegg they go for $21 a Liter. (Pretty ridiculous, IMO).

    Bisimoto (located in Ontario, CA) had some for sale but recently have been sold out and have not been in stock either.

    Has anyone used this stuff? I got my Prius as a gift, so I can spare a few expenses for something as premium as that, although I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make (although if it'll keep this car running for all eternity, then I might be inclined to splurge a little ;)

    I'm also attaching the white sheet for the Bisimoto car; some other interesting features are the high silica tires, the covers for the rear wheels, and the lightweight racing seats they put in (maybe a little overkill, but I like the idea).

    Check with TOYOTA - or your Manual to check that it meets their specifications - for Warranty reasons. Personally, I'd stick with the original, at least till it's out of warranty.

    It could be I need coffee, but I think that converts to $67.76 (CDN) per liter??

    That is very strange: here I'm getting it in bulk for $4.50 (Canadian dollars) per liter, through dealership. They also sell bottled liters for $5.91.

    I just spend $13.50 to get a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 synthetic, I doubt a “real” synthetic would save in fuel the price of admission

    Ok, that brings it to $13.55 (CDN) per liter. I think retail oils like Mobil 1 or Pennzoil 0W20 are close to that, around $11~12, in bottled liters on automotive specialty stores.

    Again, dealership sells me bulk Toyota 0W20 for $4.50 (CDN) per liter. I also get bulk Toyota 5W20 conventional oil (for our daughter's Pilot) on occasion, for $3.50. Everyday price, and what I really like, besides the price, is I'm not contributing myriad oil-fouled bottles to the recycle stream.

    Synthetic is used more to allow for longer service intervals than to save fuel.

    Mobil 1 is a Type III + PAO Synthetic mix

    The op is looking at PAO + Type IV mix

    Both have extended drain times and are “synthetic “ whatever that means these days.

    Type V VRS Mostly Type IV oil really has no benefit I’m aware of.

    I have no experience with PurÖl or their products, but I think it’s worth noting that nothing under that brand name appears in the American Petroleum Institute’s database of several hundred 0W-20 motor oils, from all over the world, recognized and tested to meet the ILSAC GF-5 specification called for by Toyota in the Owner’s Manual for the fourth-generation Prius.

    The PurÖl website makes a general claim that their product “exceeds the standards” of API, but I couldn’t find anything specific about whether their oil meets all of the requirements—intended to promote not only engine durability but also fuel economy and emissions performance—covered by ILSAC GF-5 or API SN.
