PC. I just learned about the P&G technique and watched some YouTube clips. I tried it on the way home from work and I'm not sure if I'm doing it correctly. Please see screenshot below:

On the ECO Score display, I accelerate up to my desired speed, let go of the accelerator, and then lightly press on the accelerator again so that the gauge only shows a little bit (i.e. 5-10% of the ECO meter). When I do that, I still see the EV symbol appear. Is that okay or should it be completely off?

Is there anyone that uses a different display to do their hypermilling techniques? I'm guessing that it will be easier to see when you're gliding if you use the Energy display.

FYI: My mileage for the first few days with my new Prius C was 45-50 MPG without knowing P&G. Now that I've reached the 60 marker, I can't wait to reach 70-85! ^___^ Thanks, PriusChat!

I'm still trying to figure out the gliding. I've read somewhere and IMO after about more than a week of practice the best gliding position is when no green or blue at all. Any green using the battery power, blue is recharging the battery, nothing meaning the car is moving with out using any power at all. It's like the car is in Neutral without physically shift to N. My foot hurt for two months and about to get used to driving in EV and now the new "glide" is giving it a new hurting spot.

Again, I'm still learning so I might be wrong.

Thanks for your response, DKTAV. Sorry about your foot. Sounds painful so i'm not looking forward to that :) No pain no gain I guess.

I think I'm slightly confused on the notion of gliding and coasting. Are they the same thing? In the videos below, it seems like they are the same thing.

However, I feel like coasting is when the level shows no green at all. When I do that my speed decreases rapidly if I'm not on a decline or have a lot of inertia.

And I think gliding is when I have a little green. Though I'm still unsure if it's okay if the EV indicator is showing.

Maybe it's because I'm set to ECO mode is why the EV indicator is showing up most of the time? It first appears when I accelerate but doesn't disappear when I put my foot off the pedal and then depress slightly again.

Hope all that makes sense. Maybe I'll shoot a video of it sometime.

True gliding is speed dependent. Over 42mph in a GenII or 46mph in a GenIII the car cannot enter a true glide because the ICE needs to spin. Under those speeds the engine is completely off and not spinning. What does this mean?

Over the max EV speed and the ICE spins and you will have to use a tiny bit of battery energy to maintain what we call Warp Stealth which is just a glide but at higher speeds. This is ok since the energy lost is very small.

Under the max EV speed and the ICE doesn't have to spin and you can be truly energy neutral except for kinetic energy.

So with pulse & glide you should aim to pulse to just under the max EV speed then glide down to whatever you are comfortable with. For this to work, however, you should be able to glide at least twice the distance you traveled during the pulse phase otherwise this will not work. I.e. if you pulse for 4 tenths of a mile then you need to glide for 8 10ths of a miles. The further the glide the better. In my GenIII I may pulse to 45mph then glide down to 25mph. I should be able to get well over 100mpg during a pulse & glide session like that. See the picture below for the perfect pulse & glide display on a GenIII. Notice at no point in the last 30min was I under 100mpg.

Thanks for the info, F8L! I'll start looking at my 5 minute display and watching how long I pulse and glide for.

Anyone know the max EV speed for the Prius C? I'm thinking it could be around 30 something.

One problem I see with going up to the 40's is that the speed limit on the city road is 30 and sometimes 35. When I glide, I get back down to the twenties which I feel is a bit too slow. Thinking this might impede traffic on the road and at worst get me a ticket.

Pulse & glide should really only be used when there is no other traffic around IMO. Speeding up and slowing down repeatedly is sure to tick other drivers off! :)

You can, however, use this technique when driving in residential areas between stop signs as long as you are not impeding other drivers. In which case you are pulsing from a stop up to the speed limit then gliding to the next stop sign.

The prius C will run EV up to 45mph then the ICE runs.
