This update is about the ADAC keyless security tests and the solutions how to protect your car.

A year ago (2016) the German automotive organisation ADAC tested 24 different vehicles with keyless technology from 19 different manufacturers (all positive, incl. RAV4).

This year (2017) vehicles from 30 manufacturers were unlocked and started using a simple hack (incl. Prius, Mirai, C-HR, RAV4, Verso).

Currently, only four car makers offer systems where the user can deactivate the keyless functionality (Daimler, Renault, Subaru and Toyota, ADAC 2016). The drivers can make a permanent deactivation by an authorized dealer (or themselves using on-board computer) or temporarily by key combination (incl. Toyota ).

How to protect?
1. Use Key Battery-Saving function (check your Manual for this functionality)
Usually, press Unlock twice while pressing and holding Lock (key indicator flashes 4 times), to cancel, press any button. According to Manual (Prime model): "When battery-saving mode is set, battery depletion is minimized by stopping the electronic key from receiving radio waves." So, your battery & car should be protected.

2. Buy Key Fob Protector (Faraday cage)

Note that ADAC tested the EU models, the US versions can be slightly different (e.g. extra immobiliser/alarm/etc. that guard against this high-tech hack).
