In general because fuel is currently cheap, especially USA; because an SUV is what people buy in the USA; because the design is outstanding, meaning that it might put you in the spotlight as being unconventional, which is what most people don't want to do.
In Europe diesels are still believed to be the best way to save gas, in Italy they think that because you cannot retrofit it with natural gas is not worth buying like other gas engine cars, because it is not "fashionable" to have one.
That's why. And also because there are a lot more hybrids out there, even from Toyota itself - so people might not buy a Prius, but maybe a Yaris/Auris (selling really well in EU), or a Camry (in USA - that model is not sold here in EU).

gasoline prices. have you looked at pick up truck sales?

if all the people whining about the election results drove a hybrid, we'd be living in a different world.

I have F250 diesel 2016....and my MPG before Dpf active clean is in city 19 when when it kick in I see 14 .....
Unless you are driving to use benefits of pickup you will satisfy cost of fuel....
    Now how about regular maintenance...
And I'm getting tired of Dpf clean warning when it come to keep driving till it finished

Around here, it seems like you can't swing a dead cat around your head without hitting a Prius. Sometimes, at a traffic light (which is where I spend most of my driving time), I can see two or three other Prii waiting with me. And an increasing percentage are Gen 4, but I'll admit that that percentage is still pretty low.

Once more people get educate themselves in benefits of having hybrid car's it will be more and more on the road....
They last longer ....cost less to maintain....
And if you buy preformance type of hybrid is crazy strong...and a lot less stress to Engine

Around here it seems like SUV, CUV and Minivans are the majority. There is a decent showing of 3rd and 2nd gen Prius though. Yesterday we were behind a well maintained 1st Gen, bit of a rarity. Trying to find a parking spot in Granville island I noticed a 4th Gen; I can probably still count them on one hand though.

I just bought a 2017 base model in Vancouver last week but brought it over to the Sunshine Coast. Haven't seen any other 4th Gen. here though.

Because paying more for something is better than paying less. And I am being serious. I'm not talking about buying a BMW for less than that person bought a BMW. I'm talking about buying two similar things that serve the same function. The person who bought a BMW is "better" than the person who bought the Toyota because that person can afford to. That's the mentality from the sphere of people I interact with.

My friend told me he would never touch the store brand stuff. He bought the most expensive name brand baby formula because he wants the best for his baby. I bought the Costco brand because it costs less and it foams less causing less burping. Buying value is considered cheap. My coworkers wonder why I use T-Mobile on a 3 year iPhone. I said because I don't like contracts and it costs less. They laugh at me and remind me that one time we went on business travel in the east coast and everyone's phone still worked except mine. It was only one time in a place I would likely never go again. Why do I care to pay $10 extra every month for the rest of my life?

The Prius doesn't sell because value is not as important as style. It's a fact that Elon Musk is exploiting with Tesla. It's also a fact that some of the fastest vehicles on the planet now are plug in hybrids from Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Porsche. The general public though has no clue.

agreed. style is everything. what will you be seen in? what will your friends say? what will the neighbors think of you?
we've actually seen it quite a bit here, since the gen 4 came out. people driving gen 2 or 3 wouldn't ever consider being seen in a gen 4.

Yup. I've a male relative by marriage, younger obviously, who teaches design and technology at high school level. He always chooses form over function/value-for-money. Guess what, be has an iPhone 7 and a BMW!

Oh and Gen 4 Prii are almost as rare as rocking horse poo down and I live. Still only seen 2 others since last July!!!! Actually, I have American truck simulator on Steam and see lots of Prii while driving in that, no Gen 4s yet, though. :sneaky:

Saw my my first 4'th gen cab last night, in the black/yellow scheme of a Vancouver Black-Top cab. Looked more legit, less of a Pokemon special.

I agree...there are still FAR too many people that associate car = success. Also, the 'big nice person truck' trend around drives me nuts. Many young guys around here with modded (raised) 4x4 trucks that obviously put quite a bit of money into them...on top of what they paid for the base truck!

As for me? I still drive our rusting 2004 Mazda MPV around. Why? Because I'm on a mission to get it to 200K miles, it is a good winter beater , and it hauls stuff well. Of course, friends/neighbors think I'm nuts...especially because they know we have nicer vehicles in the garage...but that's part of the fun!

i would like to think more people will seek efficient vehicles when gas goes up. that's what i meant by 'forced to'. but i also realize that even at $4. and $5., hybrids only made up 3% or so of vehicle sales.

It all provides more anecdotal evidence of my theory of intelligence: When God made Adam and Eve, He made all the intelligence He was ever going to make. The more people there are, the thinner it gets spread.
