Big surprise to see a Toyota Prius starter motor for sale on ebay. It's not even April 1st. See auction #330044923616, yes there's a picture. Anybody know what this thing *really* is?

That's a wiper motor.. Can't tell if it's even a Toyota part nor indeed whether it's for a Prius or not..

Regardless of what it actually is, the Prius has no starter (as we all know there is no starter for the engine...), which makes it a fraudulent or misleading posting, something ebay should be made aware of...

It looks severely beat up for being "BRAND NEW ONLY 2K MILES!"

eagle no doubt you are correct but I was laughing too hard to think so seriously about it.

silentak you are right too - when you use a wiper motor for engine starting it gets beat up pretty quick.

Anyway the seller has several other parts listed (apparently from the same Prius) so he must have found it 'in there somewhere'.

"ahh, finally have the engine compartment empty!"
    "but where's the starter?"
"well what's this thing? kinda looks like a motor, doesn't it?"
    "yep, that must be it!"

I sent the seller a note stating that the item listed wasn't a starter motor for a Prius. I also suggested that he take the auction down before someone complains to eBay that he appears to be trying to defraud people.

One of the other items he is selling is a "Hybrid Transmission".

Well, it sort of looks like MG2. Can't tell if there is an engine attached or not. Also looks like some wires and hoses have been cut.

Clearly this person is clueless when it comes to the Prius.

hey get this... they also have the brake master cylinder listed as a "steering box"
    a junction connector listed as a "fuse/switch"
the exterior beeper for the keyless entry listed as a "fuse/switch"...

    DH is laughing so hard...

they changed the "starter" to a "pump" which DH thinks is actually a rear wiper motor- either way it's a wiper motor...

the tranny/mg1/mg2/psd unit looks like it was just hacked out of the car.

The cool thing is that since this stuff isn't listed right it's possible you could get a part you need for cheap...esp. since the sellers don't even know what they are or what they're worth.

These parts could all be from a stolen Prius...

yea, I suppose, but I think we have to give the Ebay system the benefit of the doubt. If it were discovered any of this was stolen they could track, via shipping codes, etc, the source pretty easily.

You would think that someone trying to sell a "hybrid transmission" for $800 would make an honest attempt to make the item look GOOD, but not this guy. Come on, i can see his shoe in one of the photos.

Yeah, i sent him a message through e-bay yesterday telling him it wasn't a starter since the Prius has no starter - put forth the idea that maybe it was a pump, just to see if he would actually change it...

This guy's full of BS - ebay really should just remove him completely...

I wouldn't say that. The Prius has a bunch of parts that other cars don't have (and is missing a few that others do have). If this guy is really running a small, family owned slavage yard you can't expect him to know all this about the Prius.

Anyway, like Evan said, if you happen to need one of htese parts, you can likely get it for less than it really costs...

Besides, he has 100% positive feedback so he can't be all bad.

I imagine the corrected eBay listing would look something like this:

"For sale: Part thingy that came out of a Prius. I don't know what it is; maybe a starter, maybe a wiper motor... bid and find out!"

Someone got carjacked, but was smart enough to keep the fob with them. This guy gets to where he's going and turns the car off. Of course can't get it back on without the fob, so he chops it and puts it on Ebay.

I'm thinking he just got some parts from the garbage bin of a Toyota garage. And look at his other auctions, like this one, he's selling the Infiniti emblem but he's missing the "N". This guy has to be a dumpster diver.

Aha, Soylent provides a new theory. It could explain why no HV battery is on offer (as we would expect from a wreckmobile). But how would he have known that the donor car only went 2k miles? Just a lucky guess?
