I’ve been into modifying cars for a long time and seen some crazy mods so this is probably not far out there.

I did some research and couldn’t find anything on this topic but would (has anyone done this) be possible to convert your gen 4 non prime Prius to a Prime tail light?

I doubt it - it's too different. Check the profile of the back and the hatch. Unless you've got unlimited $$$ - in which case anything is possible.

If it’s more economical to just buy a Prius Prime (as opposed to doing conversion) then I obviously would take the Prime..

I ask because I’m in the market for a gen 4 and wanted to see if it’s economically feasible.

I’ve seen some comparable Primes in my area for just a tad over 2k compared to non Prime.. if the conversion is a lot less than 2k, then it would be a go for me (buy non Prime and convert it) but if it’s around 2k to convert, mine as well get the Prime or just live with the standard tail lights..

Personally, I prefer the Gen4 rear - it's more focused and together - the butterfly or tuna mouth and the separate low lights of PRIME are uncoordinated.

Perhaps with parts from a junkyard Prime. You may need the carbon fiber hatch with the wavy rear window too.
    Good Luck

And I don't think the profile is the same - maybe where it joins the roofline, but not the guards or bumper.

Maybe you could go "the whole hog" and put an Aston Martin Vulcan rear on - the tail-lights are a better iteration of the PRIME lights:
