i was wondering, what insurance companies have had the best deals on insurance rates? i realize rates very greatly from area to area, let alone person to person but getting a general idea of better priced rates would help out alot!

ive noticed allstate seems to be the highest so far, but have been struggling to find a lowest and any help would be appreaciated, thanks!

Farmers insurance in CA offers a 5% discount to Hybrids. I know you're in Mi, but maybe you could use the info as a bargaining tool.

My wife and I have State Farm - they SUCK. I'm the perfect 36 y/o driver, and my rates went UP $12/mo, going from a convertible 2dr V6 sports car with only front airbags to a 4dr V4 hybrid with advanced airbags all around. You know what the agent's secretary said? "It must be higher because it costs so much to repair those hybrid cars"

Maybe it went up because you are now driving a NEW vehicle that would cost ~$24K to replace if it got totalled tomorrow rather than an OLD one that had lost a lot of value?

    Just guessing.

you're right, of course, and I knew that... :D Just wanted to point out the secretary's ignorance - never did like her much...

    Still sucks though! :(

I have State Farm also. Not a big fan but my insurance did go down when switching from my 2002 Montero Sport to my 2006 Prius even though the current value of the Prius was 2x that of the Montero.

I went from driving a 94 Toyota Tercel to an 05 Toyota Prius and my rates doubled from $35 per month to $70 per month. (I added collision/comp to the new policy). So now I pay $840 a year - I have friends who pay out nearly that much for car insurance per month so I am not complaining!

I have State Farm and I actually asked if that was all I would be paying considering I was going from a car valued at $1500 to one that cost $26K.

When I bought my Tercel in 94 it cost $13K and the insurance with collision/comprehensive cost me $1000 per year. Twelve years later I buy a Prius for $26K and it cost me $840 per year for the same type of coverage - so I guess you could say my rates for the same type of coverage dropped by nearly 20%!

I found that Progressive and Geico pretty much had the same price... I was disappointed that Traveller's, even with the 10% discount, was higher than both. Shop around.

When I traded my 2001 Honda Insight for my 2005 Prius, my
insurance, already at a fantastic rate, (clear record)
only increased $4.35. That's SAFECO. I did make sure my
agent listed the fact that I had vin numbers etched on every
glass, and that I had front, side and rear side airbags, and
    that they understood smart key.
Still, I was amazed at the the price, and, it stuck, no follow-up
letter of increase since Nov. on my six month rate. I would have
thought the collision coverage would have increased but it
didn't. Still maintained 500 deductable, and 100 deductable on
comp. 489.93 for six months with my POS old truck added to
    the liability portion.

I have State Farm, I have had pretty good service from them. However, fortunately, I don't really use my insurance very much. But the local agent is very good which is most likely why I like the company. I have checked the rates and State Farm, for me living where I do, is about the same as other large companies with agents. Having a local agent really helped me when the "big hail storm" went through here about 12 years ago. I had about $15,000 of damage to buildings and one vehicle and they came through with no problems, thanks in part to my agent and in part to the company rep that was here.

My previous car was a '98 Accord EX V6. The insurance on my '05 Prius is about 1% or 2% less than it was on the old Honda even though the Prius is valued at about 3 times as much.

I was pleasantly surprised, my agent said it was because the Prius has a lot of safety features that the Honda did not have. Features such as side airbags and VSC, the Honda did have ABS as of course the Prius does.

State Farm. I've had excellent service from them and got a slight discount for driving the Prius. They kept their projected rate (over what I paid for my '91 Escort), but then lowered it after 6 months. I got my car in 2004 and I think State Farm was still working on their statistics for the new Prius.
Consumer Reports has consistently rated State Farm one of the top two or three companies. Your rates, of course, depend on where you live, how much you drive and your driving record.

allstate. 23 y/o female and 27 y/o male, married. i have no tickets or accidents in the last 5 years, he has a few tickets. 05 prius with 100/300/100 and 87 camry with liability only.

    ~106/mo.

and that was using his insurance credit rating, which undoubtedly is lower than mine. hey, i was going to complain to them about that...

    I've got 21st century.

    I can pay online.

They don't have a hybrid discount but they have other discounts, good driver, teacher, etc.

I've never had a problem with them.

I've got St. Farm and pay $345 every six months with a $250 deductible on Comprehensive and $500 on collision. This also includes emergency road service for $2.90. (towing, running out of gas, flat tire, etc.) Since the 06 Prius doesn't have roadside service, this brings peace of mind for only a couple of bucks. My 2006 Prius insurance is cheaper than my 2005 was, yet the 2006 cost more (package 8 vs. package 6). I think their rates are dropping on hybrids. Good Luck

I forgot one of the best things about my State Farm agent. He put me in my Prius. During a meeting with him last November I told him I was looking at replacing my Montero Sport. He asked if I had considered a Prius and took me out to look at his 2005. He showed me all of the neat gadgets and insisted I take it for a test drive. He gave me the card of his salesman who he said would treat me right and the rest is history. He said he has put 5 or 6 people into a Prius.

We have State Farm and we like our local agent and her assistant. They both have always treated us well with everything. I called back in November to ask about insurance rates for a new Prius, HCH, and Corolla. There wasn't much of a difference in insurance prices, so that didn't impact our decision on which car to buy. I didn't write down the actual rate for the Prius because it was still uncertain what the rates would be for the 2006 Prius.

Every time I have "price checked" with other insurance companies, State Farm always wins. We have good driving records, two vehicles, and our homeowners, too, so we get several discounts.

Well, we had CSAA for a long time, then I needed to add my teenage daughter to the policy. That would have doubled it, so I shopped around a lot, and ended up going with Geico, since they had the lowest rates for 2 adults and a teenager that I could find. I was also very happy when I replaced my 1990 Honda Civic on my policy with the Prius with Geico, since I was expecting the insurance to go way up (a $23K car vs. a $1.5K car). It went up about $100 (most likely the safety features helped), so I'm pretty happy with them.

I'm going to be adding another teenager soon, I'm really nervous about what that'll do to my rates.

At any rate, the advice to shop around is good, since your particular circumstances can make a lot of difference as to which insurance company will be a better buy. I also look at service (not just price) when I buy insurance, that's what I liked so much about CSAA, their great service.

I'm paying nearly $1000/6 months because I'm an "alien", but apparently getting my driving record as issued by the State motor vehicle transport department back in Australia will significantly reduce my payments.

So for any other foreigners coming to the US, get your driving record before you get here!!

In any case, there was no Prius discounts through Geico.

We used to have State Farm for everything. Until we had a fire in the house and they wouldn't pay because we would not submit to their interrigation and scare tactics. For us, State Farm sucks. We have Met Life now and for the last 15 years they have been great. We traded our 2000 MR2 for the '06 Prius and our rate went down $10 per term.
