Prius C electric motor swap possible?

    Has anyone looked into whether if it's possible to swap the Prius C 45kW (60hp) motor with a regular Prius 60kW(80hp) motor? Or any type of electrical performance upgrade?

    The two electric motors are part of the transmission. No way to swap them.

    The Prius trans is larger overall and won't fit the downsized C engine or mounting locations.
    I guess you could always hack it, but you'll also need to alter the battery and control systems.

    You would be better off getting a Prius drive train and making your own car :cool:

    My answer is odd. In every Prius explanation I have read, (and I have NOT read one for the c) M/G2 is sized larger than the battery can supply and larger than M/G1 can supply, and in fact larger than both can supply.

    If this is also true of the c, then making M/G2 larger will not help.

    Seriously though, it doesn't seem a good idea, near-new vehicle, under warranty and all.

    The c (lower case) has a quite different HSD than earlier Priuses ... it is more like the Lexus HSD than the earlier Pruises in that there is NO CHAIN, and the double planetary gear system of the Lexus hybrid is employed, with the ICE input shaft having three planet gears (hence also the MG1) whereas the MG2 has five planet gears on its input, which only makes sense as MG2 is normally doing more work.

    The internal lubrication is quite different as well.

    Toyota document RM000004ELD010X is available on Toyota's site (16 pages), and goes into great detail about this new drive system, including diagrams showing the relative motions of all the shafts and other components in each of the drive's modes.

    No.

    The C uses a completely different transmission than any other Toyota/Lexus hybrid. The exception is the Gen2 Prius engine to transmission bolt pattern might be the same, as they share the same base engine, but that's where it stops. No other HSD will even bolt to the C's engine.

    If you want hybrid boogie in your C, the best available option would be to swap a complete 2.4 liter system from the Lexus NX300h in. Extensive modification, and electronics know how will be required ;-)

    Sure, the basic 1NZ-FXE engines are the same, but the 1NZ-FXE was extensively updated for the Prius c by replacing all belt-driven subsystems with electric motors.

    These are 1NZ-FXEs in name only, and not in their specific implementation.

    ...yes, the fact that the Gen1/2 and Prius C 1NZ's are about 70% different, as well as the the differences between the generation 2 and 3 HSD, as well as the differences between the P410 and P510 transmissions have been discussed ad infinitum on this forum.

    It's especially well known by those of us who own hybrid specialty repair shops.

    Don't take this the wrong way, as you may just not know, but everything you wrote in your original post that dug this two-year-old thread up from the dead, is pretty common knowledge here on Prius Chat. The member base here is very tech-savvy. There's not much that hasn't been written and discussed about the technical difference between the C and other HSD's.

    I don't think it is likely to be possible. From what I read before Aqua was released that it was Gen II based, and that they specifically redesigned HSD and made it smaller and lighter than Gen3.
