According to Dr. Prius, the hybrid battery is at 41%. Researching to buy a new or refurbished battery, any recommendation to reliable sites/shops would be appreciated.
Also, I am looking for a prius pro mechanic in Baton Rouge or close proximity

Look at buying an OEM hybrid battery from a local dealership and replace it yourself.

How many miles on your car?

with a gen 3, the potential head gasket failure makes large investment unappealing

The dealership won't sell you the battery. Unless you're hybrid certified.
I was going to get one for my Prius, but they guy said Toyota said they can't sell
it over the counter any longer. I think he was more upset about it than me.
It turned out well for me though. I'm happy with Jack's Sodium Battery!

I would not buy a refurbished battery from any company. They cannot afford the time & effort to properly refurbish a battery pack. If you are DIY, one other option might be a cylindrical cell kit from newpriusbatteries.com. Some people have been able to score a battery from a junked Prius. My 2017 Prius Two battery would have worked nice.It only had less that 57K miles on it when it got totaled.

The plan is to buy a refurbished one and pray it’ll give us a year or so of drive time. Meanwhile, I will work on the old battery; the process looks so appealing that I might get myself into the trend. mechanics are absolutely amazing, more I learn, more I love it

A recent post from a PriusChat member said he had no problem getting a price for the HV battery from his local dealership. Take a look at this thread: https://priuschat.com/index.php?posts/3500209

Are you willing to drive to Oregon, if needed, though?

There may be more, lenient dealerships, nothing specific about Oregon?

My point is it may vary depending on the individual dealer or perhaps the whole Toyota region. This almost sounds like a regional level decision to me.

FWIW, I'd be inclined to let dealership do the swap, pay the extra labour (hopefully not more than $500 USD) for several reasons:

    1. Avoid the "core charge" hassle.
    2. If I'm not mistaken, you get 3 years warranty versus 1 year, for cash-and-carry.
    3. No finger-pointing, if there's any problems; it's fully dealership's responsibility.

That is assuming you can afford that. Unfortunately, money is extremely tight for many in the US right now.

I only know what the guy told me.
And it's a mute point, at least for me. It worked out much better, and a lot less money!

ASRDogman said that the dealership would not sell the HV battery to someone unless they were hybrid certified. That is a pretty broad statement. I was trying to counter that claim. So I supplied the link to another thread where a PriusChat member just checked their local dealership, and he got a price and delivery. So, some dealerships will sell the HV battery to anyone, and some will not. It all depends on the dealership.

You only quoted half of what I wrote. If you are going to quote something I write,
quote it all, or not at all...
    ...
but they guy said Toyota said they can't sell it over the counter any longer.....

Usually misfire codes, P0300, P0301 or P0302 (general, cylinder 1 and cylinder 2).
