Primary driver display blank. car runs and charges ok. Ideas?

    I start the car. The check eng light comes on for 3 seconds then goes off normally. The drivers display never comes on. Everything else works except cruise control. It happened once before and I turned it off and on and the display came on normal.

    Does anyone know where the display controller is? All relays and fuses check good. Ever heard of this? The 12V battery was replaced last fall and reads 13.8V which is fully charged.

    I'm on a trip far from home and not sure if it is safe to drive home. Also no fuel indicator.

    Your symptoms sound like a failed combination meter. This is a known problem with the Gen II 2004-2009 Prius. Toyota has even offered a extended warranty for those models to cover the problem.

    Ah. Thanks. I searched on 'combination meter' and found the symptom. Not exactly a good thread title to find blank display but this is going to get me going.

    Here is the info straight from Toyota on the combination meter. Print it out and take it with you when you visit the Toyota dealer. FWIW, they will probably keep the car longer than a day and are supposed to provide a rental car free of charge. There is a time limit on the warranty extension which is spelled out in the attached document.

    I wanted to update this thread. I got my car into Toyota but it wasn't easy. When I called, they didn't know anything about the ext warranty for the Combination meter. They also said they would have to observe the failure mode before they would consider repair. I told them I had photos while driving with the display blank, and that didn't cut it.

    Called Toyota NA through the 800 number and had a case opened. Then downloaded the ext warranty file and took the car and my laptop to the dealer. They still didn't want to fix it. I gave them the case number from Toyota motors. After talking to 3 different service writers, and one customer care rep they agreed to take it in. They kept talking like they were doing me a big favor, like I was getting some kind of special treatment, and they were only doing this cause they were such good people. It really got on my nerves.

    Next, they said they had to keep it for 3 days. Fine, that's what is in the warranty paper so ok. Then they talked about it for a bit and said at least a week. Oooooookkkkkk, a week it is, and no loaner. I said they needed to give me a loaner, and they agreed to a loaner for one week. I'm betting the car won't be ready, and they'll want their car back in a week.

    Really was not expecting this from Toyota. I'm not impressed at all with the way it was handled. The first service writer didn't even offer to investigate what I told them, just that it won't be under warranty after so long a time. Seems like they think there feces is fragrant or something and anything like this was the Big Favor Only For Me.

    Glad to hear that you are getting somewhere. Shame that some dealers act that way. If you have a choice, I would take my business elsewhere.

    I would definitely let Toyota Corporate know how you are being treated.
