    Hello All,
Sadly I was just in a car accident and my car was totaled. I had been admiring the Prius vehicles on the road for a long time now, so I would like start looking into purchasing one. I live in Los Angeles, what is a realistic out the door price for a new 2011 one? I'm not very familiar with the packages as I just started looking about 2 hours ago. I'm assuming I would go with a pacakge 3, but I'm not committed to it. I'm looking at the MSRP toyota has listed, but what is a realistically good price. I just want some backgorund knowledge before I walk into a dealership. thanks.

Actually it more an issue of availability due to the gas prices and Japanese shortages...

Good luck. ONe of the worst times to buy a Prius- as you can see form other threads. You are looking at most places wanting above sticker in LA. Cheapest I have found so far is Sticker price at Manhattan Beach Toyota with most expensive being $4,000 over sticker at North Hollywood Toyota. Gas prices are going down and the cars are supposedly back up to 100% soon- so prices will come down. Question is, how long can you wait?

That being said- I can't wait longer so I have turned my focus.. umm.. to a Ford Focus. Great gas mileage, and great car inside with a ton more bells and whistles for much cheaper. Problem is- those cars are even tougher to find than a Prius. But unlike Toyota, you can still get a Ford for a good price. Thru the x-plan as a shareholder it's invoice price! Problem is- to special order the exact car takes 10 weeks.

It's just interesting to see how different car dealerships/ companies handle hard to get cars.

I don't mind waiting until Fall. That is when the new 5 V comes out right? Maybe the prices for the 3 or 4 will go down once the plug in and \the new bigger one comes out? Or do you guys think the prices have stabled at what they are? My friend bought his for 19k 3 years ago. Sigh.... I'm guessing they will never go back to that.

It's not a 5 V. In the fall the new Prius v is coming out which has more cargo room. There will still be a regular Prius 2, 3, 4 and 5 available as well.

My II's are a variety of colors... and a variety of xtras.
Black with bluetooth at $24,779. White with mats and cargo net and rear bumper applique at 24,820. A few incomings with just mats at $24,500 to $24,700 depending on color.

My cheapest III's are either NAV Package white with mats @ 27,630 or Nav Package blue with mats @ 27,410

sure they will, right after the economy improves, and we have another bubble, and it bursts, and the economy tanks, and gas prices go down... figure around 2028.

HA! I could wait until late fall, but not sure I can wait till 2028. I'm hoping with the new models and the plug-in and the C coming out, the old prius will stabalize in price. Wrong forum to ask (so please don't run me out of town with pitchforks), but I may look into Insight because that price seems a bit more comfortable. I remember when I looked into the prius a few years ago, they were about 4k less than they are now.

The AAA price for a Prius is over MSRP while Insight's price is invoice. They can't sell what they don't have but I suspect you'll have an easier time finding Insights.

Looks like pricing is starting to come down a tiny bit. Costco deals are back- got an email offering $700 over invoice. Still not good- but it's starting to creep back. Stopped by a dealer in LA yesterday who told me last month he was only able to keep 2 at a time in stock now he has 17. Because Prius was so high in price I started to look at other cars to buy. Loved the Ford Focus- but those care are IMPOSSIBLE to find in upper trim levels. Yet when you do find them you can get at invoice. I guess the motto is, Be patient.

I was told by a Honda dealer today that Honda is ceasing production of the Insight for the rest of this year so that they can focus on production of their other models and finally get some vehicles on their dealers' lots. Apparently, they took a much larger hit from the tsunami than Toyota did. Not sure how much truth there is to this... But it is what I was told.

My local honda dealer has received 3 in the last 2 months. Their lot is barren otherwise. I feel bad for them --- they have nothing to sell.

I actually almost bought one of them the day they got one delivered a little more than a month back. I was at the neotiation table for an hour, them I remembered that I'm a Toyota guy. I just couldn't justify stepping down to the Insight just to save a few thousand dollars.

I don't mind being patient. I have had several toyotas and a honda in the past. Would love the Prius because it has a roomier back seat (car seat), but these inflated prices/ceepy sales people are starting to get to me. They are everywhere ;) They are making a new BIGGER prius (whatever it will be called, you guys are better at this than I will ever be) and the plug in. Common sense tells me the prices will go down towards the end of the year. Common sense HAS led me wrong in the past, so I hope it wont this time. My coworker bought his for under 20k a few years ago. I'm still trying to get over that :) After looking and digging around for the past week, I think there will be room for negotiation with dealers by Oct/Nov. Surely December. Right? What do you think?

If you are able to get by, be patient. If not, there are many choices out there for you. I purchased my wife's Prius a year ago just because it was a nice car. I liked it so much, I purchased my IV last February. It seems that timing is everything when buying a Prius. Last July, the price was a few hundred under sticker..Last February I got my IV for $2,500 under sticker (including $1,000 rebate). They were trying to move the 2010's off the lots to make room for the 2011....then the earthquake changed everything.
You have choices..only you can make the correct decision.

Ok, so is it just me or are the prices going down/production getting better. I had a local so cal dealer call me to say they had 20 on the lot and another 20 on their way. He is totally willing to negotiate. I'm not in a rush an would prefer to wait until sept/Oct/nov, but when I started calling last month, the dealers only listed what they had and the msrp. Now they have more and no longer reading off sticker price. Anyone have similar experiences? Different thoughts?

Prius inventory is up & prices have dropped a bit. Liberty Toyota in Burlington sent an e-mail coupon for $500 off a Prius.
