What should I pay to replace the ABS pump and module on my 2012 Prius w/ 177k miles? I'm in Knoxville TN. Dealership quoted $2500+/-. Parts are 04008-11347 brake repair kit $951.41 and 04006-22147 brake pump assembly $692.62. Labor $840. I know online parts are much cheaper after a quick Google search. How many hours labor should this be? I'm getting the c1391 code and have the brake light, abs light and traction light lit on the dash.
Someone else might have better information, but I think Toyota extended this warranty to 200k miles (some lawsuit)
The only recent class action settlement (July 2022) extends inverter coverage on 2010-15 Prii to 20 years and covers extras like rental cars. Enhanced payments are delayed until January but Toyota already covered the flawed gen3s for 15 years. In a similar manner, brake boosters settled last year but consumers only received the pre-existing Toyota Customer Support Programs related to the flawed brake system. It did have an unlimited mile warranty but expiration dates passed for the hatchbacks and v wagon. Now "secondary" coverage is ten years from first use or 150,000 miles, excluding all 2010 cars and most 2011s even if under 150,000 miles. The miles limitation also excludes the majority of 2011-2015. As Toyota already settled the brake booster class action, there is little chance for more coverage. Since Toyota was paying for most brake boosters through last year on the unlimited provision, an aftermarket solution, new or remanufactured lacked financial viability. Maybe Dorman or some enterprising shop will jump in and make some dollars. Many online Toyota parts departments now offer reduced price oem master cylinders and pumps. Some Priuschat pundits suggest changing only the master cylinder after listening for leaks; Toyota replaces both parts which seems logical.
$2500 from a dealer is actually a good price. I paid $1900 at a hybrid shop that used new Toyota parts and have heard of dealers charging $3k to $4k.
It looks like I can get the two oem parts shipped to me for about $1211, based on a search on google. That would save me about $400+ compared to the local dealer. If I brought the parts to my local mechanic how many hours labor should I expect this job would take?
$2500 is a very decent price for that job. To be honest I would not just trust any local mechanic to do this job. Only go with a local if they specialize in hybrid work, specifically 3rd gen Prius. The dealership will usually warranty the parts and labor if things do not work after install. It’s much harder to hold a small shop accountable. Good luck and keep us updated!
I think it is about six hours book time. Make sure they have Techstream or equivalent to calibrate and bleed the system. Toyota mechanics have some special tools to aid the process but others can't buy them. So the time can take longer especially if the tech has not done it before.
The one I used did it in about a day but they are a hybrid specialist and do these regularly so much that they keep the parts in stock. They didn't break down the labor on the invoice but I dropped it off after they closed on a Thursday and it was ready Saturday morning and that was with them working it into the schedule because they were so busy with other stuff.
In another recent thread, somebody 3D-printed that nut installer tool. Maybe they'll publish that on Thingiverse or somewhere
Does anyone know where they have part 04008-11347 in stock? 3 dealerships I spoke to said they are not stocked and will take one to three weeks if they order it.
I am going to give it a go with Airport Toyota. https://www.rickmcgillairporttoyota.com/ I have an appointment for next Friday. Hopefullythey can obtain the pump assembly/brake booster part by then.
