Not enough miles to post yet but here it is for my "first day" with the Prius... Mostly freeway miles (about 8 miles each way was not freeway)

I would also recommend sharing with Fuel Economy that has a 'user mileage' option. The reason is to reach non-technical readers who might not know about fuelly.com. It also gives the EPA a 'heads up' on the quality of their Monroney (window sticker).

i have a question about fuelly. first time using it, so i apologize if my question is bad. i filled up my tank yesterday, and i want to input the data today. where it says "miles since last fill up", do i input how many miles i've driven so far on the gas tank or the odometer reading?

i'm guessing it's the odometer reading, but i just want to confirm.

also, if it is the odometer, i've driven over 200 miles since i filled up, will i input the current odometer reading, or the amount that it was prior my fill up (which is 200 less)?

I added in mine (to my signature as well) but only having to fill up about 1/2 as much as my previous car thanks to the great MPG numbers I am getting.

With every fillup you enter what the odometer was reading at the gas station. Fuelly does the math, recalls your previous odometer reading, subtracts it from the current one.

Having said that I've got a few puzzlements myself:

1. What happens with your first fillup, when you have no "previous" odometer reading. I'm sure there's a workaround, perhaps for that first report it asks you to enter both the odometer reading and miles (or kms) since last fillup? Sorry, it's been about 5 years, can't recall exactly, but it did work.

2. I was thinking you could set a preference on Fuelly, to either do the odometer reading, or just enter your tripmeter (or hand calculated) distance since last fillup. But looking now I didn't see anything like that in settings.

One thing: using the odometer reading from each fillup is the safest way to go, not prone to accidental reset. Trip meters are convenient, and give feedback, how far you've gone on a tank. I do reset the trip meter at each fillup. But they're error prone, things can happen. You can accidently reset them, a battery swap will reset it, and so on.

 

I use the miles since last fill up option since I reset trip counter A. What I've been seeing is the reported MPG is 4% higher than what Fuelly is finding. This is over the course of several fill ups, so I feel reasonably confident using a 4% adjustment, although I have not confirmed the accuracy of the odometer. Nonetheless, I'm amazed every time I get gas and see how little I use.

 

I am curious about one thing in particular...first I am a new Prius Prime 2017 owner (just bought it used) so I'm certainly a newbie on this site. Second, I have been using Fuelly for many years and with my previous cars I always filled them up (never used 'partial fillup') so felt I was getting a decent representation of MPG. With the Prius after reading multiple threads on this forum I'm thinking that I will try and keep the gas tank at 1/2 and after 500-600 miles add 2 or 3 gallons. So, my question...if I check the 'partial fillup' will Fuelly give an accurate MPG? TIA. Bill

 

Not sure. Off the top of my head hunch: individual tanks could have wildly inaccurate mpg, but the running average will be increasingly accurate, as tanks accumulate.
