Since the 12v battery just wakes up the electronics and it's the high voltage traction battery that cranks the ICE, would a very small capacity portably jump start pack be sufficient? In other words, is it simply unnecessary overkill to haul around a large jump pack for a Prius dead battery emergencies?
Yes, any small lithium jump pack will do. Just be aware, in snow country, bring the pack inside with you. They don't like the cold, any more than we do.
Food for thought: I've never needed ours for ours, but have occasionally helped others, with a variety of vehicles. That said, the Clore JNC660 I have is apparently in need of a new battery, and Clore, while they sell the jump pack in Canada, won't ship the proper replacement battery here. There's some knock-offs available, but I'm not sure how reliable they are. Maybe have to do the mail-box-in-Blaine trick...
Coincidence @Mendel Leisk -- Clore JNC660 is what I have. I'd like to reclaim the space it is using. @Leadfoot J. McCoalroller -- Noco is what I was looking at based on reviews. Seems like I can pull the trigger. Mendel, if you were closer, I'd drop my old JNC660 off!
Answered a similar question not long ago. The answer can depend more on how dead the battery is than on how little current the Prius theoretically needs to go READY. Details in the linked post.
A personPosted here jumpming a turd gen with a drill battery pack before. So that means yes low amperage jump pack will work ona low battery. A dead battery with0 volts, good luck without a boost feature
