Featured Plug-In Hybrids Polluting more?

    Not sure if this has been posted before, seems familiar? Maybe similar news article. Anyway, this was posted yesterday on Green Car Reports:

    Report: Plug-in hybrids are polluting more than claimed

    The argument skirted, but worth considering: even if the engines are polluting more, if they're only running say 20% of the time, does it cancel out?

    It's interesting that the report focused on 3 SUVs that are optimized for acceleration and power. One had over 400HP. Those are hardly the best in class when it comes to emissions. Mendel makes a good point... If the ICE is only used occasionally, it might cancel out the extra pollution.

    The same tests with a Prius Prime should have a different result. I did like the closing note from that report: "and plug-in hybrids do have some big positives associated with ownership and smart use of modes. Consumer Reports found that they're more reliable over the long term than either all-electric cars or non-hybrids."
