    Hey all,

I've been scouring the site to see if anyone's had their plug in battery replaced due to it running down. It happened in my 2007 Prius after 165k miles and I'm nowhere near that right now (49k miles). I got the old prius battery replaced through Green Bean and that was great, but it doesn't seem like anyone's offering a plug in battery yet. I'm trying to determine and look out for when this kind of thing would happen and what the cost would be when the battery inevitably dies. Any conversations on the topic that I've seen are a bit old and there's a lot of math and speculation on when a battery would die, but nothing concrete.

Has anyone had to replace their PIP battery? If so what was the cost? Just trying to plan ahead albeit years in advance.

    Thanks!

not sure. i only recall one under warranty. i think you have a long time to go. keep in mind, pip is li-on vs nimh in other/older prius.
not sure if the longevity will be better/worse/same

we do have a couple members with upwards of 200k with no issues, but no ones battery is older than 7 years

I remember that one that was under warranty. Seems like there was one other one, but I can't say for sure. At any rate, it must be exceedingly rare so far. When the time comes, I'm sure it won't be cheap.

    The parts numbers:

Up to build date March of 2012: G9510-47090
    From March 2012: G9510-47091
(not exactly sure which side March 2012 is on...)

Toyota seems to not be offering them, using the expression "no longer available". Aren't manufacturers obligated to offer replacement parts, for a period significantly longer??

I wonder if @2k1Toaster 's components could be used?

The last PIP was a 2015 so under warranty till 2023-4? Should have batteries available unless Toyota wants to buy back the car. If there is a market for replacement/upgrade batteries someone will make them. Wonder if you could squeeze in Samsung's sdi cells in a Pip and get a Prime? Would be great to see aftermarket options available when the time comes. But with the limited number of years and units run, not holding my breath.

So, PIP battery dies, it's a brick (@bisco's term)?

    This is not good.

We don’t know yet. On these threads it has only been brought to our attention one or possibly two failures. Nothing recent. That’s a good sign so far. Maybe capacity just continues to slowly fade off into the sunset.

    Not taking chances:whistle:?

Yours would at least meet time and not miles ;).

Might be a good longer term experiment, say 15 years:p.

Or get the best of both worlds and replace the Dakota and PIP at the same time with the Rivian;).

It’ll be mainstream by then (y).

Talk to dealership, ask what's with this "not available"? They may have more insight. Or email Toyota. Cus this is weird: isn't it supposed to be 10 years from cessation of production, as mentioned above.

Very different case, but I don't know about the individual cells. I have never opened mine, but I'd guess the cells are like the other Li-ion batteries from Toyota.

I'd suspect given the cost, size and low volume of the item, it would be a very special order. And given that Li-ion batteries have a shelf life, it's probably better that they're not "in stock" lying in some warehouse for years.

We have similar rules in the EU for car parts being available for up to 10 years, though I can't find specific information if it's a law, and what you are entitled to if they cannot provide the part.
