lately i've found myself thinking "wow, i've answered this question one too many times already, forget it" quite often. it gets tiring repeating oneself so much over the course of multiple years, y'know. part of me was tempted to just reply using links, and i have in a couple of recent instances. but damnit, if people are too lazy to search for themselves, then i'm too lazy to search for them too. call it infectious laziness. i do not know.

if you want an answer, folks, PLEASE use the search function first. many of your questions are extremely common and have been addressed umpteen times on the forums, and there's a reason you get few responses... it's a dead horse.

i'm honestly not trying to be snotty or sarcastic here. i genuinely want people to get the answers they seek. my husband and i have spent a LOT of time on these forums putting answers out there for people to find if they only use that SEARCH FUNCTION. that time is very limited now, and best spent addressing major issues and/or new problems that have not been addressed in the past.

after mentoring three students in the past 2 years, i have found the best way to teach someone is to show them how to find the answers on their own. here on PC, that would be the search function.

thank you. i will now step off the soapbox.

That reminds me, is it true that the Hummer is "more green" than the Prius?

No, but it's true that many Hummer drivers are "green" with envy each time they see a Prius take 1/3 the time to fill its tank . . . and then seeing the Prius silently glide away - knowing the Prius will go almost twice as far on that 1/3 sized tank of gas.

Hey Galaxee (trying to recover hijacked thread topic)! Sometimes PC search doesn't turn up answers. I usually use the Search function first (see, you can even embed it), but when it comes up with bupkis, try a Google search for the question terms and include site:priuschat.com. Google searches and indexes PriusChat everyday, and they know a lot about searching.

For example, I did a PC search for GPS fail and got nothing. I did a Google search for GPS fail site:priuschat.com and got 244 hits.

I agree, answering the same or similar question time after time gets to be boring. But I still remember how excited I was when I got my first Prius. And saying RTFM over and over is pretty boring too. Thank you and your DH for all your contributions!

Yes, I do know... after 7 years myself.

It's the very reason the USER-GUIDE was created.

Just think of how much more repetition we'd have without it. Ahhhhh!

I think the forum could do without all the sarcastic comments. But as long as I have your attention I was wondering if anybody can tell me the difference between standard and touring edition and whether the touring is worth the added cost?

Glad to have that off your chest Gal?
I'm pretty sure that all of us veteran posters have, at some point, either made a similar post or very nearly did so. But it's pointless.

You're preaching to the choir, it's going to be newbies, for the most part, who post the repeatative questions. Or it'll be people who did try the PC search, found nothing b/c it sucks butt. Or it'll be those who know the answer is out there but are too lazy to do the search...often b/c of past frustrations with the crappy search function. I don't even use it any longer and go straight to google, but not everyone is that seasoned to know to do that.

So... what I do now is let those who are not yet so beaten down as me answer the 'easy' questions. It lets them become contributors to the forum so that it isn't the same 10 names showing up to answer each and every question. If the post lingers for a while and nobody answers I'll step in. If it's 3am and I'm having a slow night at work I'll answer it. But at 8am when there are 4 pages of posts from overnight and I need to be somewhere else in an hour all those repeat questions get ignored, by me, comfortable in the knowledge that someone else will take care of it.

I pick and choose the posts I read a lot more carefully these days. Novel issues, hot topics on what should be straight forward subjects often have gotten off topic or someone brought up something controversial or more complex.

I haven't answered a "how do I turn off the reverse beep" question in so long that I'd have to look up the answer myself now! But somebody else that just figured it out after getting their car last month will be thrilled to be able to help someone else with their newly acquired knowledge.

Gal, your value here is your access to more advanced technical issues...I suggest you don't sweat the small stuff and look for the issues that few if any of the rest of us will know the answer to. This forum is too busy for any one person to 'do it all'....your frustration probably stems from a little guilt about not having time to answer all the questions that come up.

There's a story in Greek mythology in which a farmer is traveling along a dirt road when his wheel gets stuck in some mud. He cries and calls for Hercules to come help him out of the situation. Dutifully, the champion comes to his aid. When Hercules sees the problem, he asks the man how he has tried so far to free the wheel. Upon hearing that the man hadn't tried for himself, merely calling for help at the first sign of trouble, Hercules responds, "before you call to the gods for help, put your shoulder to the wheel. The gods help those who first help themselves."

Is there any way to have "BEFORE YOU POST" quidelines? For instance, use the priuschat Search function. If that doesn't get you an answer, then explain how to use Google search for Priuschat.

I'm sure people will still post duplicate topics, but maybe some guidelines will help.

 you could say that. i kinda had one of those days all day yesterday, and even jayman's favored recommendation of heavy drinking did not help.

yeah... that was the direction i was moving toward. i'm just kinda irritated that we took the time to thoroughly answer questions on a number of topics that are now passed over. but whatever, i have bigger things to worry myself about right now. and bigger things still as time goes on. life demands that i get over it.

I'd use the search feature, but I can't seem to find it. Can you give me detailed instructions of how it works? Numerous photos and some diagrams would help. Maybe you can write a short instruction manual. :p

I just want to say that Bill is right. I have used the search function -- maybe almost always -- until today. Today, I wanted to be sure I got to the best stuff, because I am so angry at these talk show hosts for raising this issue of Prius polution again. I did not want to mispeak or use old info that isn't the best. I confess I don't have time to read Prius Chat on a routine basis. The Prius we bought is wonderful, but I suppose that goes without saying.

As a result of rudely asking for info without searching first, I was treated to some excellent summaries and links and to a disgusting bit of vulgarity. I am a software developer and understand search functions. The one provided here isn't the best. If you think it to be ideal, Galaxee, maybe it has been improved and I should give it a shot next time. I know there will be a next time, primarily because of people like Galaxee and Bill.

Nevertheless, I don't see why I should have been kicked around like I was.

I'm a bit fragile lately, so I'll leave the area so as not to further provoke anyone. Carry on ...

Actually, PC search is so weak and useless, I never use it anymore. All newcomers should learn to use
Google search instead. If there isn't already a sticky for this then there ought to be one, in BIG BOLD
letters, right on the Main Forum.

I do try search first but if I have the wrong wordage and unsure if the topics been discussed then wont go much further than first failure

By posting and asking has there been a thread on ***** is much more likely to jog someones memory and they'll try to find it using words that they remember
An index might be the way out - but how to set up?

while we're on the topic of only posting questions that haven't been answered yet...

how come i'm not getting the EPA gas mileage?
how often should I change my oil?
and, of course... does A/C affect gas mileage?
