    Hello @moderators,
Moderator @Tideland Prius just closed my NexPower V3 Discussion thread:

I do not believe this is warranted, as there are legitimate safety issues under discussion regarding the V3 prototype I reviewed. Closing this thread prevents further discussion regarding the technical deficiencies.

My recommendation is to reopen the thread as-is.
If the moderation team is worried about behavior "not in the spirit of PriusChat", then they could prevent the following people from posting in the thread:
    @AzusaPrius
    @black_jmyntrn
    @Logan Angrybird

However, @Tideland Prius responded saying that he will not reopen the thread because:
I question the rationale behind @Tideland Prius statement. Does this moderator really not want us to discuss severe safety issues with a 3rd party product being offered to the Prius community?

    ...

If the moderators ultimately decide to keep the thread closed, would there be any issues if I posted a new thread to continue the discussion?

    Another proposal:
Delete all off-topic comments and then impose a strict "you will be banned for straying off topic" moderator note.

Frankly, I'm stunned that a moderator would close my thread regarding safety issues, and then tell me to "stay in my own lane":
Shame on @Tideland Prius for denying public discourse regarding a dangerous product being sold to the Prius community.

Does that include the part where you agree you derailed my thread?

It's very strange that you closed that thread. If someone breaks the rules, then they should be punished, not all participants

I was just reminding you of the slander videos and libeling you are doing in the forum.

Derailing would be what you did to my thread and hijacking it to get views to your little YT channel.

Funny how you call out me and black_jmyntrn who has been quiet by the way since you got him banned the last time you cried about his comments.

But what strikes me the most is you call out logan Angrybird for making one comment that makes total sense.

You really just want everyone to listen to all the stuff you have to say and type, yet when there is pushback or truth being said about what you are doing then all hell breaks loose and you get your panties in a bunch.

I think you should take what has been said to you by Tideland and listen to it.

Show the forum what you can do and not just bash Jack's product and company trying to be some product sheriff...

All of a sudden you want special privileges and demands being met just for you huh?

@mudder The moderator closed your thread because it was far from reality. Here is my response to your video to set the record straight.:

I finally had the time to watch your YouTube video, and I am disappointed to see that not a single word you said is true. It’s clear that your goal is to lie and discredit the hard work of others, which is very distasteful. Here is my quick response out of your 48 minutes video.

At 10:34-11:30, you mention that the cells are moving around and even touching each other: You failed to observe or mention that we have applied a fiberglass reinforced layer to the outer shield of every cell where it could potentially touch a neighboring cell. This includes two layers of fiberglass reinforcement and tube shielding, providing a thick plastic barrier between neighboring cells. This implementation is exactly what you described you would do with a plastic sheet, yet you ignored this fact and twisted reality just to make the product sounds bad.

At 12:01-14:07, you mention the glue is broken and the tab is moving around: What you are referring to is flexible thermal paste designed to insulate and dissipate heat, not to glue anything together. Its purpose is to loosely create a flexible gap while insulating electrically and dissipating heat from the adhered object. The bottom of the tray has many concaves where the battery cells are permanently seated. You failed to observe or mention this in your video.

At 24:21, you guess that someone messed up the BMS and needed to flip something and poorly soldered it: You peeled off the fish paper, Kapton tape, and exposed the battery terminal, pretending the wire broke off by itself. How can a thin gauge wire, held in place by soldering, fish paper, and Kapton tape, suddenly fall off and dangle around? It's sad to see you or the owner sabotage my product and put on a show.

At 26:49, you mention these cells have terrible routing: How would you route them differently? These routings are optimized by one of the largest cell manufacturers in the world. I am interested to see how you would do it differently and how the manufacturer would react to your criticism. You have managed to offend not only me but also one of the largest manufacturers in the world.

At 28:26, you claim this product is unsafe due to a lack of supervisory control: We do have supervisory control, provided by the Toyota battery ECU. If the block voltage difference exceeds 1.2V, an error code occurs, and the battery shuts down. It seems you don’t own a Prius and are not an expert on the sodium-ion battery, making claims based on pure assumptions.

At 31:04, you say Jack does not take feedback well: This proves you are lying. I have been on PriusChat since 2015, and this entire project is based on feedback from the Prius community. We continually improve based on input from real testers and customers, some of the beta testers turn against me due to your manipulation, but I kept pedaling to give the best possible customer support. During our first and only meeting, you told me how bad my product was and threatened to make a video about it. I kept my cool and told you to go ahead. Please enlighten me how is that not taking feedback well?

At 31:34-32:28, you mention there is not enough space and air can’t get through: If you look at the Toyota blade design, you’ll see there is even less space for air to get through between the tightly interlocked prismatic blades. I suggest you find a Prius with a stock battery, dig into it, and make a video criticizing Toyota.

At 39:51, you claim this is the worst product: You keep saying that and yet can't make a battery for the Prius, all you ever show is your Arduino-based circuit board with computer fans and your effort to discredit me in every corner. If you truly are a doer with the ability to create something real, I encourage you to make it happen and show it to everyone.

    Jack

Jack, for now I will hold off on replying to your comments, as they are off-topic. I don't want a moderator to infer that I am continuing the discussion here, as they specifically told me not to do so. For now I will reiterate that I stand behind my claims. If the thread is reopened, I will reply point-by-point to your feedback, which again I disagree with.

If the thread isn't reopened, we can continue this conversation on reddit. I'm glad at least to see you are now replying to my feedback.

I am trying to run a business and supporting real customers, please stop wasting my time with your false claims putting fear in people and turn my beta testers against me. I seriously don't understand how you can sleep well at night hurting others like that... sigh....

@Xeico You are just as bad as this mudder guy, all talk no action.

You are just another wannabe competitor like he is and just come on here holding hands talking trash on something the two of you can not and will not ever make.

I don't think we've had any but the one active mod for a while now.

I'm not sure that he owes an update at any particular time. It's probably better to be patient than demanding.

It occurs to me, as the other thread was closed for behavior "not in the spirit of PriusChat", maybe some good that could come out of a discussion like this would be a more shared understanding of what the spirit of PriusChat is.

I was going to take a couple stabs at that here, but have just taken a phone call that will probably be long.

FYI: There's only one volunteer moderator and their decision is final. Moderation on this site is almost entirely hands off unless a significant number of people have reported the same thread to the moderator. No one is getting paid to facilitate these threads and it takes a huge amount of bickering from all sides to get 'em to shut a thread down. Those threads never get re-opened.

As for the moderator's warning to you about your behavior, I know from experience you only get one warning. After that, if you keep it up, the next interaction with the moderator will be a 30-day account deactivation with no notice and no way to communicate or appeal. Your login simply won't work... After 30 days, once your account is reactivated, if you persist, the deactivation is made permanent.

This is a cost effective way to manage a busy forum-based website that generates a million page views a month. After a dozen years of being on here almost every day I'm only aware of a handful of threads that have been crazy enough to be shut down and an even smaller number of people that have been permanently banned. We're all very tolerant of each other on here, even the weird ones on here are allowed to say as much crazy stuff as they want, but fill the moderator's inbox up with too many reports from the same thread and they make the problem go away real quick.

In the case of the thread in question I suspect it was all the people redundantly bickering/threatening about how they and their allies are going to sue each other and attempting to describe what it's going to be like, which is not only uncivil, but off topic and not relevant to PriusChat.

Also, I worked on my first legal brief to save old growth redwoods back in '92 and have since then spent way too much time around lawyers and their gatherings... Every one of them will tell you that telling people you're gonna sue them weakens, rather than strengthens your case. People who threaten to sue people are indicating they aren't being advised by a lawyer on the best way to proceed. Lawyers prefer to be the one to decide when to tell people you're suing them. That's not the client's job, that's the attorney's job.

I own a Gen3 Prius with its NIMH battery and an 11 year old Tesla Model S with its 85kwhr Lithium Ion battery pack. I have looked into various EV's Lithium Ion battery pack's design and manufacturing, Also repaired a friend's failed Tesla pack (opened, studied, determined failure mode, repair etc) In general, really complex to handle it safely for longevity.

High energy density cells with flammable electrolytes is a whole different beast from NiMH. Require much more cautious operating window and always require constant and very tight balancing amongst the cells. Most lithium ion EV BMS will disable the battery with < 100mV imbalance (depending module voltage) for sake of safety. Don't want to charge older cells that top off first and just bleed heat while the remaining cells is charging up when dealing with flammable electrolytes. Cells/modules are balanced for this reason. Prius's NiMH has no balancing logic that I'm aware of as NiMH is inherently safer.

Based on my understanding of Lithium Ion EV's battery design. Using high energy density cells with flammable electrolytes is definitely a challenge for Prius NiMH replacements. There are many complex safety issues. As an example, Tesla BMS handles older batteries different than new ones. It will charge slower and max out its active liquid cooling system above 80% SOC for safety.

@mudder summaries all make sense to me. Safety is a big complex issue dealing with flammable electrolyte cells. But in general, it will likely be beyond most people's understanding without deep dive into various high energy density cell battery chemistry and pack technology and its detailed nuances.

Yes... Every battery chemistry has a different safety protocol. Lithium-Ion are the most dangerous and require the most redundancy in terms of safety. All batteries sold by the person who's product is in question are lower density and not Lithium-Ion so if they fail they may smoke and melt plastic, but they won't burn the car to ground like Lithium-Ion can.

Sometimes it is not obvious to one, that what they say and do can be used against them....

They act like they know sending cease and desist letters for no valid reason but in the long run, they really have no idea what they are doing.

There will be no further comment on this matter.

    Have a good day!!!

I wasn't aware that PriusChat only has one moderator. Why is that? Do other members not want to moderate?
Why keep old mods around that haven't logged in for years?

I agree nobody is held to a schedule, particularly volunteer moderators. I was a reddit mod years ago and it is a thankless job.
@Tideland Prius was initially fast in responding to my private messages, but I worry they are now ignoring my push back. I don't want to get on their bad side, hence why I'm choosing not to respond to NexPower-specific comments made in this thread.

I just want to understand their motivation for closing an entire thread simply because one member couldn't behave? Or is that the real reason?

The spirit of what I'm writing is to protect community members from dangerous products. Surely this community tolerates that purpose?

John (mudder) has made comments that have helped out safety in mind as I work on these battery packs in customer cars.

It is helpful to the community to have this info.

I, and others need to have this topic openly discussed and PriusChat seems to be the correct forum for it.

I hate for a single thread to require so much moderation, but I think the community will be better for it if it can be reopened.
