Hi ya all. I have been reading this chat for a while but just today registerd up. I have a 05 prius with lots of problems. I have no power steering, Every warning light is on and the climate controle is all messed up, I can see the buttons but i can not get them to do anything, they are very light. I am wondering if there is one ECU that controles all of these items, I have 4 other parts cars so I should have what ever that it needs. If any one can help I would appricate it greatley. Thanks Casey

You have 4 other Prius parts cars???? Holy Moley! Regarding your problems, if your car is a 2005 as you say, it is under warranty. Take it to a Toyota dealer. <_<

no one ecu that controls all that.

    audio controls working ok?

does the car go into ready mode? does it drive at all?

    warning lights on the mfd?

sounds like what you've got going on is way more than can be picked through on a website, might wanna take this up with your local dealer.

With all those problems and the available parts cars, is this a salvage attempt of some sort?

FWIW, take it to the dealer, there's a hell of a lot going on there, and it's gonna be impossible to troubleshoot it online.

And if you *do* have a bunch of parts you don't necessarily need
right away, there are probably a bunch of people around Madison
who want to know how to get in touch with you!

It is a salvage car, it was hit on the left side but it was all cosmetic damage, only paint. I have the other cars for parts, any one that needs parts can contact me through my email, I had a post under parts but it was removed. As for as taking the car to the dealer I will if nessary, I just dont want to pay the cost if it is something simple. The audio does not work , it says audio off. Thanks for all of the info so far and if I figure out what it is I will post it so every one knows. Thanks again Casey

As resident expert galaxee has not written, I'll observe that a Prius is very complex. You'll need Toyota's proprietary diagnostic device and the complete shop manual to have any chance of diagnosing and fixing everything that might be wrong. I hope you did not pay very much for this salvage.

and like we've said... there's a lot wrong with the car, and it's going to be impossible to tell you how to fix it/what parts to replace online - especially since it was involved in an accident and has a salvage title.

Salvage titles don't go on cars that only had cosmetic damage.
Take the car to a dealer if you want it fixed. It's too complex for someone but a trained Prius tech with the shop manual and the scanning tools to diagnose and repair.

I'd check to see that your 12V battery is connected properly. Might be a loose connection somewhere.

though it's true you may not be able to perfectly debug the car, it's also fairly simple to trace many of the issues to the most common logical breaking point (you may not be able to fix a fried IC but you might be able to logically and physically locate said IC in the car if you're \/\/illing to spend the time).

do you have the cd changer option in the car? if so, check the disc slot indicator lights. if the connectors are loose or even one pin is bent you might get the issue i have seen before: even if the stereo is playing, you only have volume control and steering \/\/heel buttons to control it as secondary po\/\/er to the unit is not connected.

Start simple..... If you are having issues with the MFD... audio and climate are included since the controls for them are handled by it, try swapping it out first. 04s had an issue with them. Climate and audio would both become uncontrollable. Toyota now has remans avail at much less $$$ than the new ones. If you have donors... be sure to check the part number listed on the back to make sure you are testing with the proper one. Power steering? I would first try swapping out the power steering ECU.

I am sort of jealous that you have donors... It seems like the factory answer to us techs is more and more "test with known good component"... Good Luck!

    12v

I'd be highly suspicious of the 12 volt system. Check it for voltage level- maybe at a few different points around the car, like at the battery and at a power outlet and a bulb socket. Also check for any stray AC voltage on that system- if any significant amount of AC voltage gets into the 12V DC system all sorts of things will start to behave strangely, especially the computer-type stuff. Ideally check this with an analog meter, as digital ones are often too slow to pick up on weird transient hiccups on the AC side. Trusty old analog meters won't be able to quantify how big any weird transient might be, but they will sure twitch to let you know something is up. If the car sat for long during the repair process the 12V battery may be low or flat-out trashed from being too low for too long.

I'd also look for a bad ground that might be common to the group of affected components, and poke around for possible wet/contaminated/faulty harness connectors that might be common to them too. Ideally you'll find a place to test the 12V system for AC and DC voltages right where the harness connects to one of the affected components.
